What was (is?) WSC?

Dumb question, I realize, but what was (or is) the WSC project that i see
referenced here so often?  I realize that most of the threads about it are
in the context of 'will it ever be more than vaporware?' - but I am a little
confused about what all the commotion is about.  Is it just a World Sports
Car simulator as the name implies?  I saw a thread a while ago on GPLEA's
forum that lead me to believe that WSC was more of an 'open source' project
that would allow for easy modification to make whatever type of race-sim you
want, which struck me as amazingly cool and highly unlikely.

I get the distinct impression that some folks have decided that this is the
saviour of sims / greatest thing ever / if only it would be released.  Is
this based off of anything besides idle speculation and dreams?

I don't actually care about when (or if ever) it is going to be released, I
just am curious what the hubub is about.

Cheers.
Mark

PS: Who are the "West's" that are developing it?

You pretty much have the grasp of it.  when WSC was announced, it was
still very difficult to create mods that added to current sims.  Plus it was
offering a physics level that appeared to be even more robust than GPL.  Add
to that multiplayer options that promised multiple drivers sharing the same
car AND all this running on a PII 450.
WSC was/is ahead of it's time, but other products have all but caught up
now(caught up that is...by releasing features that WSC promised)..The mods
for F1 2001 are very good.  WSC could still be something special, and it
will be an open source type product that can be easily modified and added
to, but private users have almost done that with other sims now.
and as for the West's, they are two brothers who have been doing this
alone...No giant teams of artists, engineers, coders, etc.  WSC has been
thier own private baby...and we wonders...if we will ever see it...

Check out my 'World Sports Cars Movie' thread to see it in action. It's an
early video, mind.

Nick.
