Eric, i've had similar problems with GPL and my STB V4400 TNT card...

You mentioned "Sounds like you're running using MS's software OpenGL driver,
and not NVIDIA's hardware accelerated ICD.  Is this a Win95 or Win98
machine?"

How can you tell if your running MS's OpenGL driver vs. NVidia's?

I'm running Win98 and have the Detonator drivers loaded.....
