what is the proper tempature of a cpu?

by John Moor » Sat, 17 Oct 1998 04:00:00

I can't seem to find this anywhere. Iv'e been running my overclocked
celeron 300a for over a week now at 374 (4,5 x 83mhz bus) and since it was
barely warm ( the back of the chip ) I bumped it up to 450 4,5 x 100mhz
bus) and it is still barely warm. The cpu has a big heatsink with one fan.
At both speeds my temp measured 46 centigrade according to the mb
diagnostics. So my question is... Is that cool enough?
On another note my video card (thriller 8meg) chip was hot to the touch
even at a 66mhz bus so I took an old isa card and cut a big round hole in
it and mounted a standard case fan to it then put it in a slot below the
video card blowing air dirctly on the whole card about one inch away...
wow, the chip is cool any any speed now.
And yes, now I can run GPL with everything on at 36fps. Except at Monaco.
Hmmm, I think I'll overclock the video card a little bit.....

Don't come crying in here when you SMOKE that puter.......

there will be no smoke, it is the same chip as a 450PII but intel shut it
down. It's well known that it runs fine at 450. And if it does smoke I can
buy 4 more for the price of a 450PII chip.

what is the proper tempature of a cpu?

I too have a Celeron 300A overclocked to 374Mhz (I can't get 450... I
have tried switching my 128Mb of PC100 SDRAM to all three dimm slots but
have had no luck).  When I first got the new CPU and I was running it at
300Mhz the Mobo temp seemed painfully hot at 40oC; there was no rise in
temperature when I put it up to 374Mhz.

I live in Ottawa, Canada and temperatures have dropped as fall
progresses to the point that daytime highs are only about 15oC or so and
there is an occasional frost at nights.  This has had a big effect on my
Mobo temp and it has dropped to a fairly stable 30oC.  I have the power
fan and an additional fan at the front of the case sucking air out
rather than drawing it in plus the heatsink and fan for the CPU itself.

46oC seems a little high to me, but what is the ambient temperature of
the room?

I have just purchased a Monster 3DII (8Mb) myself and will have to check
how that effects temperatures.

Cheers,
Gian Vitzthum.

First question - what do you push to get a Degree symbol???

Secondly - I have a Celeron 266 running at 400mhtz.  It is a 'boxed
version' so has a heat sink/fan on the chip.  When I first got it up
and running the motherboard (which has a heat sensor - I'm using an
Asus P2B) was getting right up to 41-42 degrees C (106-108F) after
only an hour or so.  (I wish I knew what temp the CPU was .....whew!!)

Now, it runs at about a max of 28C continuously - depending on the
room temp here at home - has been 10-15C lately.  (And no flak from
you ***s in the northern hemisphere either - summer is almost here
for us...!!)

What did I do - I grabbed the transformer fan out of my old case and
put it in the front of my ATX case - which is midtower size.  It sucks
in air also as the vent is very close to the CPU at the rear.  I
haven't bothered changing the direction as the results are fine.

the room temp is about 68 f, or just a little on the cool side, i need to
wear a shirt and good socks. The back of the cpu card is barely warm to the
touch. I'm using an abit mb which checks temp through the software bios
setup menu.

No... It can't be 70'C... that is WAY too hot.  Anything hitting near 50'C
will cause some serious problems with your computer.  I have an overclocked
300a running at 450MHz and it's usually about 32'C max.  And that's without
adding any fans except what came on my boxed cpu and in my case when I
bought it.

I'd like to get it cooler to run it at 504MHz... I've gotten it that high
but it won't stay stable when accessing my hard drive.

36.  I am using the Glacier 4500C heat sink with 3 fans that you can get
from Net-n-Dude.  But I don't think you need to worry.  Your temperature
seems fine.

I don't get it... I am running at 450 also with a 300a and I barely reach 30
degrees C.  I'm not putting any fans through it at all.. just what came with
the case... I've had no problems with heat.. in fact, I've gotten it up to
504 MHz... unfortunately my hard drive goes kinda nutty sometimes so I am
running 450 again.

. Iv'e been running my overclocked

It should be OK at that temp, but you wouldn't want it ANY higher....

>No... It can't be 70'C... that is WAY too hot.  Anything hitting near 50'C

Don't wonder -- go read the spec sheets at www.intel.com.  My P2-333 is
rated for 65C.  It varies by S-spec (write down every single thing
written on a new processor when you buy it, so you don't have to open up
the machine later when you need the info), but 70C is in the right range.

I bet that 32C reading is coming from a temperature sensor somewhere on
your motherboard, not from one actually touching your processor.  You
can't compare that number directly to processor specs.
