Although I don't like it, I can't really argue with Sega not allowing
Papyrus to use the Daytona name (although the Daytona people shouldn't have made
a deal that gave Sega exclusive rights). According to a post over in
rec.games.programmer by a programmer at Papyrus, they are doing NASCAR Racing for
the Sony Playstation (PSX). Sega's Saturn and Sony's Playstation are big time
rivals, and with Sega having Daytona on the Saturn, they wouldn't want the
Daytona name to ever appear on the competitor's system. Now if Papyrus wanted to
put NASCAR Racing on the Saturn, I imagine Sega would have no problem with
letting them borrow the name.
Of course, the biggest question is why Sega feels threatened by NASCAR
Racing. The games are in 2 completely different classes - Daytona USA is nice
graphically, but comes closer to driving like a WoO car than a stock car, while
NASCAR is a pretty accurate simulator. Completely different games and audiences,
IMHO. But the way the industry goes, I see why Sega won't let Papyrus use
Daytona on anything. Unfortunate, but it makes some sense.
