Any response from Sega?

I could have the facts wrong, but I've seen at least half a dozen people
mention it in this newsgroup. I also remember reading in a Game
Magazine a while ago that Sega had to pay quite a lot of $$$ to get
the name for Daytona USA. (which actually has almost nothing to do
with the Daytona Track)

Cheers,

I just sent some mail to Papyrus asking them if this is in fact the
case. They *confirmed* the rumour that Sega owns the rights to
Daytona, therefore we can assume that there will be no Daytona track
 in the near future.

Papyrus did *not* say if they were trying to acquire the rights or
try to do some sort of deal with Sega so that the track can be
 released with Nascar Racing.

There still isn't any reason that Papyrus couldn't create a big
tri-oval with generic scenery, shaped something like a well known
track on the Florida coast, and put it on the disk under the name
"Papyrus Raceway" or whatever.  I'm sure that it's the name and logo
of Daytona that were bought by Sega.

Thanks for the information.  I will send a little note myself to
Sega in regards to their greed.  I mean, what does a shallow ARCADE
racing game have to fear from a fairly detailed PC simulation...

This subject was discussed with Papyrus and they did not want to get
involved with anything that lawyers might find interesting..... Adam
stated that Papyrus dealt with Sega in Japan and still could not get
rights/terms/ etc.

shortsightedness.

Don't hold your breath.  I did it it over a week ago and no response.
Obviously they don't care what I think.  Two can play that sim.  If I
don't receive any feedback from them within 30 days, I will NEVER
purchase a Sega product.  I will make my opinions very vocal as well.
How about a new group: ALT.SEGA.DIE.DIE.DIE

Exactly what I told them.

...and he/she/it will say "whos cares?" until it gets really big and out
of control.  Press on regardless!

Nah.  Mine was worse! ;)

Although I don't like it, I can't really argue with Sega not allowing
Papyrus to use the Daytona name (although the Daytona people shouldn't have made
a deal that gave Sega exclusive rights).  According to a post over in
rec.games.programmer by a programmer at Papyrus, they are doing NASCAR Racing for
the Sony Playstation (PSX).  Sega's Saturn and Sony's Playstation are big time
rivals, and with Sega having Daytona on the Saturn, they wouldn't want the
Daytona name to ever appear on the competitor's system.  Now if Papyrus wanted to
put NASCAR Racing on the Saturn, I imagine Sega would have no problem with
letting them borrow the name.

Of course, the biggest question is why Sega feels threatened by NASCAR
Racing.  The games are in 2 completely different classes - Daytona USA is nice
graphically, but comes closer to driving like a WoO car than a stock car, while
NASCAR is a pretty accurate simulator.  Completely different games and audiences,
IMHO.  But the way the industry goes, I see why Sega won't let Papyrus use
Daytona on anything.  Unfortunate, but it makes some sense.

What I don't understand is why they extend their boycott to the PC market.
Sega has no interest that I'm aware of in Unix, which after the fourth quarter
will be the only platform that NASCAR won't run on.. There's no reason why the
Playstation version needs to have all the tracks, since the SP is basically a
GAME machine instead of a SIMULATOR machine.

All I see from Sega is corporate politics that make it impossible for me to
ever support them.
