While the best racing simulation on the market is Grand Prix Legends, the
most popular would be Nascar Racing 3 by Papyrus/Sierra.  It's IIRC the most
sold of the modern sims (excluding Nascar1 or Grand Prix 2).

Ignore what DGF said, GP3 is in fact a sales bomb.  It bombed, it was
nowhere near any of the charts I've seen, both European and American.

Asking which simulator is "best" is like asking which color is best...red
or blue.  What is best for YOU is what is important.
Do you like F1?  Nascar?  Rally?  Touring?
Currently the most revered sim is Grand Prix Legends.
The most popular online racing sim is Nascar 3.
The most mass market driving sims are on the Microsoft Network, the Zone.
items like Motorcross Madness 2, Monster truck madness 2 etc.
GP3 and F1CS2k are currently duking it out for modern F1 appeal.  Both have
strengths and both have some rather incredible weaknesses.
How modern and powerful a system do you have?  You may have to look to
older titles if your system isn't 'near cutting edge'
The title with the MOST different cars is SCGT(hundreds of user created add
ons.)
We could list many games...but we need to know more of what you are
looking for...

Any idea how it stacked up to F12k and F12kCS in sales????

Well no modern F1 title since GP2 has really sold much on the charts.  What
Ubisoft says about a million sold units of F1RS isn't really true.  The
title above probably haven't even sold 100k units, as if it did it would
appear easily on charts.  Compare this to 800 000 units sold for Gp2, or the
million and something for Nascar Racing 1 <g>  The PC *** market is very
sick at the moment.

Depends on what kind of racing you like.

My pics in various categories:

Racing types:
Classic racing:           Grand Prix Legends
Modern F1:                GP3 or F12000
CART:                       Indycar Racing II
Sportscars:                SCGT
Touring Cars:            TOCA 2
Rally:                        Collin McRae Rally 2
Others:                      Mercedes Benz truck Racing

If you only search for a certain kind of realism:

Very realistic and therefore hard to master:         GPL, MB Trucks
Decent realism, quick to learn:                             GP3, Indycar II,
SCGT, Collin McRae. F12000
Between Arcade and Sim:                                    TOCA 2
Arcade: Fun, but don't bother about physics:       NFS series, Le Mans 24 h

Other pros:
Best graphics:                                                     MB trucks
Most addons:                                                      SCGT, GPL,
GP3
Good internetplay:                                             GPL
Good LAN-play:                                                GPL, TOCA2

I don't know anything about nascar, so I didn't include any nascar games

For a couple of weeks, it was in the BBC top-ten. It came as high as 2nd or
3rd I guess. But, F12000 and TOCA2 were in much longer.

Hello Trevor: I expect there'll be a *lot* of conflicting replies to this
thread! Probably the NASCAR series has sold most, but let me go on...

Firstly, I must say that "most popular" isn't the same as "best". For
example, Grand Prix Legends was a commercial failure, but the majority of
people on this NG think it is the best sim available.

As you don't say what sort of racing you like, I'll just give you a list of
what I like in each category. As a guide, my preference is more toward the
"sim" end of the market than the "arcade". I'll leave out the American
series and motorbikes, as I don't know much about them.

F1 (modern): Grand Prix 3 - not what it should have been, but not as bad as
some people will make out. The weather effects are superb.

F1 (historic): Grand Prix Legends. This is *the* game. Full stop. Very,
very hard, but very, very rewarding. Also, it has a *huge* active user
community.

Rallying: Rally Masters. Colin McRae Rally (I only have v1) is also good,
but more arcadey.

Touring Cars: TOCA 2 (will STCC ever see the light of day? Place your
bets...)

Sportscars: Sports Car GT.

Trucks: Mercedes-Benz Truck Racing.

If you want to buy only one game, it should be Grand Prix Legends. It might
be hard to find, as it is well over 2 years old, but it's worth the look -
and it will be cheap (10 in the UK). The learning curve is almost
vertical, but it's *easily* worth the effort. Have fun!

I saw GP3 reduced to about $60 Aust with another 20% discount on top, I
think that sum's it up.
I think I paid $92 Aust. the 1st week it came out.
I don't even play it anymore, I went back to Nascar 3 online. Much more fun.
CMR 2 & Rally Championship 2000 are also better.
GP3 requires a lot of PC power to produce very little compaired to Nascar 3
or GPL.

Do you have an idea how little nascar3, or 4 or heat or whatever interests
people outside the US and canada ?

You would be shocked, in fact if Dale Earnhardt was having an affair with
the dog of Rusty Wallace it wouldn't even be in the 23rd page of the
newspapers here, not to mention television or radio...

Europeans have been slighlty more interested in CART (or INDY) lately
because of Mansell and Zanardi (and to a lesser extent Montoya who will be
in F1 next year) but NASCAR ?

I guess that Truck racing (the real stuff like in MBTR) is more popular in
the US than NASCAR is in Europe.

North America is by far the biggest software market in the world.  Even if
around the world titles like N3 aren't popular, the ratio of North America
vs the rest of the world in terms of PC *** is still way too high so that
any other title claim higher popularity.

Like I said, I'm not talking about the sport.  Sport events can be watched
by the mass, everybody who has a Teevee.  For PC ***, it's quite
different.  You need a PC that enough powerful to run games.

Perhaps that's true, but it's not the point of my post.  I make no mention
of the sport, only the simulations.
