Question ( Nascar ) - Arrow Keys when steering

by Sue Da » Mon, 10 Jul 1995 04:00:00

Hi out there.

I need help when steering the Nascar.

I am using the arrow keys to steer the car. What I find is the steering
goes full lock when it is on. This means I cant get a smooth angle when
turning corners.

How can I get a smooth angle ?

What do you suggest ?

Would a joystick be better for instance ?

I have a pentium 60, And every time I try to run Nascar on high resolution
I get a message like not enough memory. Any suggestions, I am new at this
game and the internet. So please reply in a nice way.

Any analog device such as a joystick or sterring wheel will make the
game infinitely better.  By allowing analog input( incremental ) rather than the
digital( either on or off) input of a keyboard, they allow you to much better
control your car.  Imagine the difference between driving a car normally and
using only full left, full right, or straight.

I would suggest the Thrustmaster T1 wheel/pedals ($110-$130) it's much
better than any other way.

Hello Sue,

For a game like NASCAR where you're mostly running ovals you HAVE to analog input, ie. joystick
or even better a steering wheel and pedals. This will enable you to gradually steer into the
turn creating a smooth line. Also being able to vary the amount of throttle helps greatly. I
use a joystick with forward and backward for throttle and brakes and left and right for
steering, and the two fire buttons for gears, this leaves my left hand free to press F1 etc. I
is well worth the $40 or so to get a quality joysick. When buying make sure it is an analog
joystick NOT a digital one, digital ones are about as useful as arrow keys. I hope I have
helped in answering your question

I can run the game no problem.

If I DID use a boot disk instead, would I get any better play or
graphics or whatever? Thanks

clean out your config.sys and autoexec.bat files of drivers like smartdrive ,
anit-virus ,and stuff like that. also make sure you are not booting up with
your CD drive, this sucks tons of ram

A boot disk will help. The amount of RAM is also a big factor. You will
most likely need to turn all of the graphics off except the following:
Skids/Paint, Objects, Cars. Try turning the others back on one at a time
and see if it works. The Pavement and Grass Texture soak up the most RAM.
My buddy is running a pentium with 16 meg of RAM and cannot run at high
res. with the pavement and grass on.
