Gameport problem - now I've torn it!

by Peter Ive » Fri, 18 Feb 2000 04:00:00

***, I've really put a spanner in the works on my system now!  After
all was looking well with my Voodoo2 lockup problems I thought I would
see if removing and then reinstalling my Creative Gameport Joystick port
would resolve my joystick jiggle probs.

Aaargh!  After removing the Creative Gameport I then rebooted.  Windows
found the Creative Gameport but then problems hit.  A box popped up
saying that Msgsrv32.exe had performed an illegal operation.  Apparently
it had caused a general protection fault in module krnl386.exe and the
only way I can now get back into windows 95 osr2 is either in safe mode
or by removing the card completely.

I've tried removing all the Card's drivers from Sound, Video and Game
controllers but although it finds the Soundcard ok during reboot - an
AWE 64 - it falls over every time when it comes to the joystick
gameport.

So has anyone got any ideas as now I can't play any sims at all. :(
Is there any way, other than safe mode, that I can bypass the finding
new hardware box that appears during startup, just so that I can try
adding new hardware from within Windows to see if this gets round the
problem?

Thanks in advance.

Creative Labs has this to say about that card:

If you get a MSGSRV32 error when you boot Windows 95, the problem is
usually that the Windows 3.1 drivers are installed instead of the 95
drivers. To remove them, restart Windows 95 in MS-DOS
mode, and then type the following lines:

         MD C:\TEMP
         CD\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
         MOVE SB*.* C:\TEMP
         MOVE WFM*.* C:\TEMP
         MOVE CSPMAN.DLL C:\TEMP

You can then restart Windows 95, and allow it to detect the sound
card itself.

You can also go here to get updated drivers:

Another great idea... I hate how win95 and 98 save all the info for
everything you have ever installed. Its stupid. And yes it can cause
havok when trying to install something new or updated.

When booted in safe mode check the system for any left over sound card
drivers.  Delete them all in the Device Manager.  Reboot once again into
safe mode and see if they are still gone.  Sometimes you will have
phantom devices still installed, but they only show up when booted in
safe mode.
