recently played "Ridge Runner" by namco or someone who wasn't SEGA, or
the makers of Virtua Racing.

It's really impressive, graphically speaking. The setup is Much better.
looks almost real. You have a stock-car, not a formula one car, and a
"real" shifter for the manual option.

I only played it a few times, but I'm usually a critical player :-)

The only _Major_  gripe I have about it: the sound sucked.
You could pick amusing remixes of various songs as travelling music, a la
"Hang On". However, sound of the _engine_, and other usefull sounds to
key off off, were NOT accurately rendered.

It used the old silly trick of having pre-rendered scenes , instead of
rendering on the fly. However.. they finally used enough resolution on
each mobile part of things to make it tolerable!
