SCGT - is there a crack for this?

by John Bodi » Sun, 15 Aug 1999 04:00:00

The need for a no-CD crack is a real one, though -- I buy all the games I
play, and I have a home network with multiple computers and driving wheels,
and it's a pain to have a decent game like SCGT that you can't network
without buying multiple copies.  I bought it, I want to play it in the
privacy of my own home with friends and family, but in order to do so, I
have to either burn a CD or buy multiple copies -- and either option in a
pain in the backside.  If it's on MY computers and I bought a copy of the
game, I should be able to run it without the CD.  I know this violates the
piracy laws, but true piracy is when you hand it out to all your friends so
they don't have to buy copies; as long as I don't pass it around to
everybody -- and as long as I use it in my own home for private purposes --
it should be mine to do with as I please.  This is why I really don't like
games that require you to have the CD installed.  Plus, I hate it when I
want to change games and I have to locate the CD (and/or figure out which
computer I was using it on last).

Piracy is a problem, but requiring the CD to be in the drive in order to run
the game is just a pain for everyone.  EA is really bad about requiring the
CD, and I'll be damned if I'll buy multiple copies of games that are already
overpriced IMO (sell them for $20 each and I probably would buy multiple
copies if required, but $49 is too steep).

Just my $0.02.  Flame me if you will.

You can play SCGT on your LAN without the CD.  In multiplayer games you do
not need the CD in the drive to play.  At least mine doesn't so you should
have no problem playing over your lan.

Good point, but that still doesn't solve the problem of having to track down
the CD depending on which computer is available for me to play on in
single-player mode.

But it DOES solve the problem you described: having to have a

>Gunner

But it still DOESN"T solve the CD swapping problem -- if I sit down in the
living room to run a few laps and the CD was in the computer in the other
room last, I have to go find it in order to play SCGT. Of course, if the
computer in the other room is off, then I have to fire it up, eject the CD,
and then -- and ONLY then -- can I play SCGT.  It's even worse if the wife
decided to remove the CD in order to insert her American Greetings Crafts CD
and then put the SCGT CD in the American Greetings jewel case.  VERY
frustrating.  All of this means that I've simply been playing SCGT less and
less these days -- and I'm sure that I'm not the ONLY one who suffers
through these kinds of annoyances when it comes to games that require you to
have the CD installed.

Just thinking about it cheeses me off, in fact.  I think I'll go turn some
hot laps to cool down -- but it probably won't be any of the tracks in SCGT,
'cause I'd have to find the CD first . . .

I wouldn't have much of a problem with saying the HOST had to have the CD.  I
believe Nascar2 was setup that way, and it worked fine for my three systems...

no shit, if you've got too many computers to remember where a friggin
cd is, then you can afford to buy another copy.(s)

1 for the bathroom PC so you can drive while  you take a dump
1 for the kitchen PC so you can do laps while the microwave popcorn
     pops  etc etc  <g>
