Just finished watching a clip on SPEEDVISION with Patrick Depailler
driving the Tyrrell 008 a few laps at the old Long Beach GP circuit.  Man
that track was great!!!!!!
Too bad we don't have it around anymore    :(

-Cheers!

You can get that track for GP2, it's a great rendering.  Not sure if they
made the LB-F1 circuit for GP3.  The only problem is that GP2 supports not
well banking, so the big and long banking you have on the SF line is not
present.

I went to all the Formula 1 races there (a bunch of us did an annual
road-trip from Seattle each year -- what fun that was), and was very
disappointed when I went to a CART race there 5 or 6 years ago. The
"up-the-hill, right 90 degree onto Long Beach Blvd, short-straight, down
the hill" section was simply amazing -- it's gone completely, of course.
The first year, security was pretty lax, and we spent one whole practice
session standing behind the low barriers on Long Beach Boulevard,
outside George's 117 bar (our official race headquarters), watching the
cars come up over the crest of the hill, turning right onto Long Beach
Blvd, and occasionally touching the barriers behind which we were
standing. Try to do that now-adays!

That's nothing, there's a track in Germany you can get right out to and run
around during the race!

I just couldn't resist.  :)

But we still have Long Beach! I've been to every one and they've all been
good races in their own way. The city has evolved and so has the race track.
The current configuration provides some of the best racing I've seen at The
Beach.

Only two more weeks...<g>

Are you including each time they get stuck in the hairpin?  That's just
pathetic.

Did you see the last lap of the trans-am series race there last year?  Now
that's chaos.

He didn't run around the whole track! He was carrying a very heavy sign!

In fact, who can run along Hockenheim?? That's along walk....

I know - he was trying to figure out why SCGT got the track all wrong....

No no, he was getting one of his last opportunities to run on the track
before they redo it.

But seriously, if you had the choice of having CART cars on either of the
modern circuit and the old one, which would you prefer?

The old one, of course<g>.

Best Long Beach memory, working blue flag at the entry to T1 the year Mario
won in the Lotus, looking into the eyes of Lauda, Scheckter and Andretti as
they stood on the brakes for the difficult downhill right hander.
