I feel like a kiddie!  33rd birthday tomorrow, I get my shifter.  I've built
my clutch in readiness...

You have to order direct from the Act Labs website (unless I've missed a
trick!) Mine arrived Friday :o) Works out at about 83ukp according to my
online credit card statement, and so far I'd have to say it's worth it.
The immersion factor is *huge*.

Heck, I don't even drive for real (in fact only ever briefly driven an
automatic a loooong time ago) but there is something inherently "right"
and satisfying about stick shift. At this rate I'll have to invest in some
BRD Speed7 pedals and learn all about using a clutch as well. Maybe then
I'll go steal a car and try it for real ;o)

Having said all this, the stick shift's great in N2002... only one gear
change every six months or so ;o) But GPL is almost impossible until I
actually teach my hand to work its way through the gears without taking
the scenic route via reverse, neutral, first and <glances at stick>
third, got it! Keeping the car steady while I take a hand off the wheel is
also going to be something of an acquired skill... I have much to learn
:o)

As the other guy said, ordered directly thru Act-Labs site.  Exactly
83.55 on my statement.  Not too cheap, but think of it as the price
of 2 games or third of the price of a decent graphics card (and
hopefully longer lasting) and the investment doesn't seem so bad after
all...

I also bought the 4 and 5 speed shifter plates which had to go on a
separate order, but the cost appears to have been included in my
Shifter order.

I'm at work now and I'm busy tonight - maybe I'll squeeze a few
minutes in...

Got maybe 15 minutes if that last night.  Wow.  Played Watkins Glen in
N2K2 - about the only thing I do at the mo.  Definately made a little
easier with the 4 speed plate.  Is it me or is the gearknob a ***
and a half to remove?  Anyone got any ideas as to how to reduce the
amount of strain I must be putting on the shaft to remove it so I can
change a plate?

Not over enamoured with the clamping mechanism.  I'd prefer it if the
mount section that goes under the wheel base extended out of both
sides of the shifter so that I could clamp both sides.  Once again,
anyone out there come up with a more solid clamping solution?

What I need now is that Momo, as a direct selection stick shift next
to the sequential stick shift on the old TM looks clumsy.
Then I need a PC that'll allow me to race rather than just practise.
A PIII450 with V3 doesn't really cut it any more...

I always found the shifter knob to be pretty straight forward to remove.  I
assume you are pulling it directly upwards. You mustn't twist it at all.  As
for plates, I leave the 5 speed plate on all the time and use it for both
GPL and N2002.

Cheers

I bought all the plates but I think I'm going to leave the standard 7
speed plate in to minimise wear and tear on the spring. With the 7 speed
you have 6 slots available within one slot left or right of the "no
lateral tension on the spring" position (I know what I mean here even if
nobody else does :o) whereas to get 5th gear on the five speed plate you
have to take the stick two slots over, which feels like much more of a
strain on the spring.

Having said that, I still need all the help I can get finding the right
gear so the five speed plate might help reduce wear and tear due to
random gear selection :o)

LOL!

Actually, the clutch was very cheap.  I bought a Rockfire Gameport to USB
converter and butchered my old T2 pedals that were sitting in the garage -
and to think I almost gave the T2 away...

Hello,

FYI, when you place an order for a 4 and/or 5 speed plate, shipping is
free.

GUYS!,

How long is the GPL shifter's USB cable?

I'm not in a position to measure right now, but there's plenty of
slack.  You've got a ps2 type connector on the back of the shifter and
two cables.  One is ps2 at one end and usb socket at the other, the
other is a USB cable that heads off to your hub (or whatever).  I'd
guess at there being a couple of metres?

It's almost 3m including the bits before and after the small usb adapter
box.
