Controler Pots

by Michael Barlo » Fri, 02 Jul 1999 04:00:00

I just finished building a wheel and pedal system.  I'm using 100K
taper pots as per..http://www.racesimcentral.net/

The problem I have now is which the steering,  When I calibrate the
steering in GPL, I can turn the wheel to the left and the triangle
thingy goes to the left, I turn the wheel to the right and that triangle
thingy goes to the right. Then I place the wheel at center and the
triangle thingy goes all the way to the left.  If I turn the pot only,
so that the triangle is in the center, I can only turn the wheel 25*
before the pot is at full right lock.  Turning the wheel left and the
pot goes all the way till the wheel is at lock. If you get what I'm
saying..

Now, While racing, I can turn the wheel from left wheel lock to right
pot lock. while I'm turning the wheel The Virtual wheel turns almost
twice as fast.  And that's after changing the ratio to 20:1 and the
sensitivity set all the way to the right and/or left.  Another wards,
the steering is very touchy with just the slightest movement.  To make
things worse, turning the wheel to the right is almost twice as fast as
turning it to the left at the same speed. (I don't know how else to
explain it)

So, My question is..  Why do I have to use tapered pots?  and.. why do
I have to use 100K pots?

Did you buy a Linear Taper or Audio Taper pot? Linear taper is what you
want.  I'm asking because I couldn't find linear taper pots at Radio
Shack.

Reading some of the emails I got about this, Obviously, I purchased
Audio taper.  I did go back to Radio shack and pick up one extra pot. on
the package, it does say.. Linear-taper potentiometer.. Part no.
271-092.  I'll replace my current steering pot with this and see.

On the back of the new pot package it says "total rotation  300* +/-
5*.  I'm sure the old pot doesn't go that far so... I'm sure the old pot
is an audio.

Mike,

As "Aubrey" indicated, you need "Linear Taper" pots. Even though it is indicated
in the "Parts" section of my webpage, I suppose it would be prudent to advise
against buying "Audio Taper" pots. However, I'm glad to see that you've resolved
the problem.
As far as the 100K issue is concerned, it is the industry standard and you
wouldn't really benefit from a higher resistance. In fact, some games won't
recognize them anyway.

Cheers,
Lew
