Hill climb simulations

by Jody Han » Fri, 18 Oct 2002 08:10:27

Hi Guys,

I am new to this news group so please excuse me if this is a FAQ.
I'm looking for a PC simulation which has hill climb courses in it. For
instance Pikes Peak. I'm particularly looking for the New Zealand sister
event "Race to the Sky" in Queenstown. (www.racetothesky.com).
If this is a no go, then the next step is to design it and install into
existing simulation (probably GPL). Are there programs out there that I
can do this with (having some programming experience).

Cheers
Jody

Hill climb simulations

Ah, another hill climb enthusiast! <*waves*> As far as I know,
there's no sim out there that will do hill climbs per se, and there
isn't a rally sim with a good enough track editor to create one. I
really, *really* wish that it were otherwise, as I'd love to drive a
GPL car up Prescott or Loton Park.

*However*, all is not lost. GPL is, thanks to years of slogging away
by many, many utterly wonderful people, about the easiest sim to do
tracks for - if you look at the following link you'll find well over
200 of them:

http://magnust.d2g.com

Now, the main problem you have to find a way around is that GPL
requires a track to be a circuit, so if you do a hillclimb you'll
have to add a "return road" to allow things to join up. Careful
course design can make this quite transparent (have a look at the
"Rally" courses designed by "madcowie" for some good examples), but
you'll have to compromise somewhere.

Probably the best example of a hillclimb course for GPL is one done
for this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed, but sadly the licence
conditions of that mean that it can't be made publicly available -
however, you can see some fine screenshots via the link above. I
suggest you might get some more knowledgeable answers on this sort of
thing on the Track Creation Forum at Racesim Central:

http://forum.racesimcentral.com

Good luck! :-)

Thanks David, that's a great help. Will let you know what happens.

X-Box owners could clarify, but I believe that there is a hillclimb
section in Rallisport Challenge which is due to come out on the PC
soon.  It's by DICE, who did Rally Masters for the PC, so I'm guessing
it will have decent physics but short tracks, unfortunately.

As far as a real hillclimb simulation goes, I am aware of none.

Hi Jody,

Ok, GPL has a few 'hill climb' type course, and one definite one.  Great
course too.

Pike Peak, the closest is Gran Tourismo 2 which has it.  It's actually not
bad either, but you need a PS1 or 2 for that.  I like it anyway, with
1000BHP in two engines..   fun!  :)

Except that you can't download it! (I'm assuming you mean Goodwood.)
