HP Pavillion ze4900.  It meets the minimum computer specs on the
rfactor web site.  1.3 GHz processor, 256 MB ram, 64 MB Video Memory,
Windows XP.

The only thing that doesn't look good is the video processor.  The web
site says Gforce 3 or some Radeon model, but mine seems to have some
standard Intel processor.  It does have DX 9 installed with OpenGL.

When I launch rfactor it says that there is insufficient memory
detected.  If I install another 256 MB is it going to run?

Thanks,
Pat Dotson

Pat?  Who has ***ped Pat?  Who is this imposter?
(still,  I'd better answer)

Maybe, maybe not.  you have onboard video which not only does not provide
a full 3d enviroment, it also consumes a good portion of your system ram.
So, given the fact you don't have enough ram to run windows XP by itself
properly,  then tack on the fact that whatever system ram XP doesn't
consume your video chip is...you could have easily run out of resources.

it will probably run,  but not well.  your entire system is so  under-
powered,  I would almost recomend not spending one more dime on it but
saving like a MADMAN to get something with more system memory,  more
dedicated video memory via a good video card,  a soundcard and finally if
you are a gamer,  then NEVER buy a Pavillion.  These are targeted at
grandmas who think an email is high powered computing.
( you may have guessed,  I'm sortof recomending a DESKTOP!!)
I'm sure the top shelf laptops can adequately run rF,  but a bargain
ba***t HP is only asking for grief.

Wow!  People still remember me around here? :)

I have a decent desktop system that runs rFactor just fine.  I'm
leaving for a few day on a business trip, though, and thought about
taking my FF wheel along to do some racing.  I bought this laptop 1.5
years ago just to run business apps and things, not games.  But I
thought it might be worth a try to kill some time at the hotel.

I started wondering about the video card taking system memory.  That
would explain the problem.  Best buy has 256MB ram for $39.99, so I
might just stick on in as see if it works.

Thanks!

you would be better off with GPL on that old machine than rFactor (lowly
HP)...  to kill time with that is...  but I say hell give 'er a go...  40
bucks is dinner for 3 at some places.

GPL is a good idea.  I don't think I"ll bother though.  I'm kind of
focused on rFactor now.

Turns out My HP laptop only has 32 MB video memory (shared), so I'm SOL
for rfactor.  Adding 256 MB RAM fixed the first error, but now I'm
getting a video memory error saying I need 64 MB.  I looked briefly at
the CMOS options, but the amount of VRAM is set to 32 MB and doesn't
appear to be configurable.

That's what I get for low-balling the price on a computer, eh?

Shared memory is always a very bad sign in a laptop if you plan to do
any *** on it. I'd stick to Minesweeper if I were you. :-)

Doesn't Live for Speed (www.liveforspeed.net) have low low entry
requirements? (From the website download link: Required computer
specifications: 1 GHz CPU, 128 MB memory, 3D graphics card)

No real cars (excepting the RB4 and MRT), and no real tracks. The cars
that are there, and the tracks that are there are very well realised,
IMO. The AI is not usable; being left back a patch or two.

(I remember your name from years back. Time flys.)

You're not alone! Nethack ist one of my all-time favourites, too. I
wonder though wether Pat would be able to run the "Falcon's Eye" version
on his lowly laptop, better stick with the all ASCII version ;)

However I find nethack tough to play on a Notebook keyboard without a
numberpad (yeah I know, old schoolers use the vi keys to move, but then
again I am not *that* old ;)

Cheers, uwe

Especially if you try and find a S1 version, I noticed a significant frame
rate drop when moving up to S2.
