Help me please ( I don't want a life without GPL !!! )

by Tom » Sun, 06 Jul 2003 08:24:44

Hi all,

Once my life was complete ( GPL worked :)

until I bought a Geforce 4 MX440.
When I fire up GPL, I get the screen that says Grand Prix Legends ( and the
version number ) and then my PC freezes completely.

So the only thing that changed is my vidao card ( from TNT2 to Geforce
MX440 ) and DX9.

I reinstalled GPL several times ( with patch 1.2, without the patch, with
opengl, with D3D and with the softdll.dll )
I also changed the setting in the core.ini and the app.ini ( according to
the readme files ) and installed the latest Nvidia drivers 44.3 for W98

Every time my PC hangs completely. So I have to reset the system. Then
windows will check al my partitions ( 60 GB HDD tests are boring ! ) So
testing GPL takes forever

System specs: W98 SE, DX9, Nvidia drivers V44.3, P3 450, 256 MB, GF4 MX440

Can any of you help me ????
THX in advance
Tom

You've an internal PCI modem by any chance? If so, start GPL, wash
your car, do the dishes (your wife will be pleased!), walk the dog,
and then check if GPL has reached the main menu. If so, you need a
CORE.INI entry I can't remember right now.

Did you recently get cable?  I think Remco might be right.  I believe in the
core ini file, you have to change the modem parameter from either 1 to 0 or the
other way around.  Something about how the software searches for what internet
access you have.  With cable, it spends a long time searching for an internal
modem that isnt there.  Can literally be minutes, which seems like a freeze.

Or not....<GRIN>

Probably a conflict with your old nVidia drivers. Try uninstalling your
current ones, then search your windows folder for files called nv*.*. One or
two may be system files, but most will be nvidia files and should be
deleted. (check the file properties to see who made it).

When done, reboot & re-install the latest drivers. Hopefully it should fix
your problem.

You might have a duff video card. Or, your motherboard may not be
capable of supplying the correct voltages to your video card. (Or any
of the other suggestions already posted. Ain't this fun?!)

If nothing else works from the other suggestions, see if you can test
drive another copy of your video card from your supplier. If you
think the techie at your supplier is knowledgeable, ask him/her about
any issues with your video card and your motherboard. If it is an
older motherboard, it is possible that it just can't handle the newer
video card.

Good luck!
