Heel/Toe Video in GPL

Further to the thread about heel/toeing, I came across this video today of
an early seventies F3 driver heel/toeing in GPL with his Act Labs gear. If
you still don't understand heel/toeing, or just want to take a look, then
download these three files:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/
http://www.racesimcentral.net/
http://www.racesimcentral.net/

The camera is usually positioned so you can see the screen, wheel, shifter
and pedals, and occasionally moves to a close-up of the pedals when he is
heel/toeing. It's about 20Mb total.

I can't read the pit board (the video cuts after the one lap), but I timed
it as a 1:59 in the Ferrari. That's inaccurate, though. FYI, the video is
2:10 long with the overlap and fade in/out. The world record Ferrari time at
Rouen is 1:53:444 at GPLRank.

Very Cool. Very Very Cool. I would really like to use GPL to practive
my heal and toeing - sowhere do I get those pedals and shifter sets
from in the UK? Also, I see GPL running on a TV there. What do you
need to make that happen? and if I went out and bought a huge
widescreen tv would it work well with that? How does a large quality
TV compare with a monitor?

Adrian (Looking to spend 2,000 - 4,000 setting up GPL this x-mas!!!)

Pretty sure they were Act Labs gear, check http://www.act-labs.com/ . Not
sure about UK delivery, though.

Any graphics card with a TV-Out. My Voodoo 3 3500 had TV-In and TV-Out, and
I played GPL on my TV using that once or twice. My current graphics card
(GeForce 2 MX 400) has TV-Out I believe, but I have never tried it (and I
can't be bothered to look down the back of my PC to find out). Check the
back plate of your graphics card for a TV-Out socket, and if you have one,
run a composite cable from it to your TV and try it out. You might need to
set it up in display properties.

GPL normally runs in a 16:9 window (hence the black bars across the top and
bottom of the screen). Most widescreen TVs allow you to choose whether to
display 4:3 (regular TV/Monitor), 16:9 (TV Widescreen), or automatic (kinda
'stretch-to-fit'). Some have zoom functions as well. So yes, it would.

You can run the game at a low resolution on a TV and not notice the
difference because of the way a TV works. Almost all console games run at
640x480 on my 28" widescreen TV and look fantastic. 640x480 on my 17"
monitor looks damn awful. Monitors are great for everything else, though
(text goes funny on a TV unless it is done properly). Lower resolution means
smoother gameplay.

Wow! My 28" Panasonic Flat Widescreen TV was 600, look here for a range of
GeForce 4 graphics cards
(http://sp2.reserve.co.uk/search/special.php?ty=cngra&de=geforce%204),
anything from 70 to 230, Act Labs GPL Shifter $60 (in the video), Act Labs
Performance Pedals $70 (in the video), Act Labs Force RS Force Feedback
Steering Wheel $140.

That's a total of about 1000. Of course, as racing sim controllers go, you
could try BRD (interactiveracing.com). Their Pro V2 Steering Wheel is 140,
Speed7 Pedals with clutch 250. That comes to about 1260.

Look at all that money you are saving! Maybe you could fire some this way
and I'll upgrade my kit too ;-). Seriously, ask around rec.autos.simulators
for people using Act Labs and BRD stuff for info. And TV's can get *really*
expensive (although I don't think more than 600 is really worth it, my TV
is great).

Who makes the wheel/pedal that is being used?

From the original Post:

So although I havent actually seen an Actlabs set up in real life I think it
is safe to Assume that it is an Actlabs setup.

- Isotrip?

Bear in mind that as I don't have Act Labs gear, it *might* not be. But I
think at least the shifter and pedals are. I don't think the wheel is Act
Labs, though.

Yes, that's where I got it from but I forgot the URL. That's why I just
posted the links to the files. Thanks.
