Pretty sure they were Act Labs gear, check http://www.act-labs.com/ . Not
sure about UK delivery, though.
Any graphics card with a TV-Out. My Voodoo 3 3500 had TV-In and TV-Out, and
I played GPL on my TV using that once or twice. My current graphics card
(GeForce 2 MX 400) has TV-Out I believe, but I have never tried it (and I
can't be bothered to look down the back of my PC to find out). Check the
back plate of your graphics card for a TV-Out socket, and if you have one,
run a composite cable from it to your TV and try it out. You might need to
set it up in display properties.
GPL normally runs in a 16:9 window (hence the black bars across the top and
bottom of the screen). Most widescreen TVs allow you to choose whether to
display 4:3 (regular TV/Monitor), 16:9 (TV Widescreen), or automatic (kinda
'stretch-to-fit'). Some have zoom functions as well. So yes, it would.
You can run the game at a low resolution on a TV and not notice the
difference because of the way a TV works. Almost all console games run at
640x480 on my 28" widescreen TV and look fantastic. 640x480 on my 17"
monitor looks damn awful. Monitors are great for everything else, though
(text goes funny on a TV unless it is done properly). Lower resolution means
smoother gameplay.
Wow! My 28" Panasonic Flat Widescreen TV was 600, look here for a range of
GeForce 4 graphics cards
(http://sp2.reserve.co.uk/search/special.php?ty=cngra&de=geforce%204),
anything from 70 to 230, Act Labs GPL Shifter $60 (in the video), Act Labs
Performance Pedals $70 (in the video), Act Labs Force RS Force Feedback
Steering Wheel $140.
That's a total of about 1000. Of course, as racing sim controllers go, you
could try BRD (interactiveracing.com). Their Pro V2 Steering Wheel is 140,
Speed7 Pedals with clutch 250. That comes to about 1260.
Look at all that money you are saving! Maybe you could fire some this way
and I'll upgrade my kit too ;-). Seriously, ask around rec.autos.simulators
for people using Act Labs and BRD stuff for info. And TV's can get *really*
expensive (although I don't think more than 600 is really worth it, my TV
is great).
