NO FLIPS???

I just found out and I am shocked that you cant get air in nascar racing 3.
I thought it was going to be built on the GPL graphics engine.  Any reason
why they didnt include it?
thanks

NO FLIPS???

Well I just got outlook express running again after a 5 month long crash.
It seems like I always hear about these things last.  They certianly have
milked the 'ol rusty but trusty nascar 2 engine for all its worth, havnt
they?
So far in my collection as a die-hard papy sim fan I have Nascar Racing (for
PC and Playstation) Nascar Racing 2, and Nascar Racing 1999 edition.  I
really want to get Nascar 3, but I dont think that my AMD 166 is going to
handle it to well.  Especially not with my Virge decelerator card.
I plan on very soon buying an AMD k6 350mhz computer w/ 32 megs ram, and
then getting a Voodoo 2 card for it.  Is this a good setup?
Any sugestions?
thanks

Sorry to say it bluntly, but..
Where have you been??
This has been known for a couple of months now and
there was a great uproar.  All N3 is going to be is
a graphic and sound update of N99 with tcp/ip multi
player added.  We'll be seeing 16 bit graphics, and 3d sound,
and D3d support, but at it's heart, it is still N2

I'm just guessing so don't take my word on it.  Since the NASCAR3 Sim
won't be as CPU intensive as GPL but will have the graphic looks of GPL,
I'd assume that if you can run GPL on your system, you will have *no*
problem with NASCAR3.

I have a K6-2/350 with a VooDoo 2 card and a few extras and run GPL
without any problems so I'll assume that my system will have Zero
problems with N3.  I'd also take a guess that I can run with even more
detail turned on in N3 then GPL and still have no problem.  So, grab
that K6-2/350 and you'll be all set.

That setup should run N3 ok.  Don't expect any great performance out of it
however.  Nonetheless, I'd seriously consider reworking your upgrading
options.  V2's are ok, but they are still expensive to buy.  You can get a
better card for the same price point [i.e. a Voodoo3 2000 or 3000 is right
around $100 bucks online, can't really beat it (even if I don't like the
specs of the card as others will be sure to point out. ;)].  Getting a
Voodoo3 or TNT2 [note, this card will work just fine with N3 as N3 has
RETAIL support for both 3dfx and D3D, the later which TNT2 is as good at as
any other high-end card].  However, CPU wise K6-2 350mhz is really an old
processor.  There are other options that are available these days that are
as cheap and will give much more bang for the buck.  Might want to explore
some more.

        And smoke.
        Oh, and sounds.
        Oh, and a better spotter.
        Oh, and an animated flagman.
Oh, and flag LIGHTS at the corners.
        Oh, and better track graphics.
Oh, and a higher poly-count for car bodies.
Oh, and tape on the grill.
        Oh, and trackbar.
        Oh, and dynamic skid marks.
Oh, and newer drivers (Tony Stewart).
Other than that, he's right: it IS the same.

Nothing personal, but that doesn't sound like enough for me to buy it.  It
seems like just 'icing'...  Most people probably have to turn off most of those
graphics options to get a good frame rate.  I don't have force feedback, and I
always ignored the spotter ANYWAY, so that's no big deal.  The newer drivers
MIGHT be a draw, depending on how many, and who.

Just my opinion.  I may wait for the next one - or at least a serious discount.

I agree....they coulda released a addon for N2 if they wanted to add all
that, I wanted a better driving experience not pretty flag men and skid
marks that hang around.

PS if they would have accepted 3DFX when it came out like everyone else this
game would have looked like this somewhere around Nascar Racing 99

My understanding of why they did not remodel it after the GPL engine is
that to do it on the scale that they had first intended, and be able to
handle 43 cars, only the most powerful computers would be able to run
it. I guess the wanted it to be affordable to run for a larger market,
But after running N3 myself, I think the AI has been GREATLY improved
over N2 and N99, as well as the graffix and sound. I find it well worth
the money. I just wish there is a way to get some of my old carsets
installed from older versions... oh well, I guess I just have to start
painting all over again.

Well, IMO it DOES improve (GREATLY) the driving experience.  I
also believe that what they've done is MUCH more than "just patch."
It's obvious from the myriad of changes, that they've done a pretty
extensive rewrite of the core code.  I DO wish they had an "upgrade"
option, but I still think it's worth the $40 for the new bells and
whistles. 43-car fields and free IP multiplayer and support for force
feedback alone were worth that.

They only have so many resources.  They stubbornly held to the
belief that Rendition was the way to go.  Haven't you heard all the
Rendition owners ***ing about dropping their support?

Thats what I mean, look at how good N3 looks now, but compare it to say the
GP500 demo and it just makes you wonder how nice N3 would have looked if
Sierra wouldn't have bought.....errr....I mean if they would have picked up
3Dfx support along time ago. Sorry to Rendition owners but when those cards
came out 3Dfx blew them away except for the fact that my fav racing games
weren't supported.

And it's sad that now they're finally playing with 3Dfx when Glide itself is
quite dated. :)
