just for fun - what has best overall AI?

What are your opinions about the best overall AI in any sim/mod/game?
Also what can be done with the AI in a given game to make a better
race?  I'm curious (across all types of racing, not just Nascar) as to
what are consistently the best experiences we have had in terms of
close fun racing, lots of passing, AI cars dueling it out with you for
the win, etc. and in what sim, mod, or game.

I have to say that that one huge problem I have noticed in many, many
sims/games is that AI sometimes do stupid things on pit strategy - for
example, when the entire field pits on the 2nd to last lap of a close
race (happened to me yesterday in a 100% GTR F360 race), or when a
Nascer field pits under green immediately after a long caution, it
sorta tends to kill the fun.  I think shared experiences on what
games/sims have good close and aggressive AI racing and/or what race
options or tweaks have worked well to mimimize stupid AI behavior
could be enlightening.

Definitely.
Or Viper racing. The only two I know of where the AI use the same physics as
you.

I think that about sums it up.  IMO any sim that doesn't have the AI
using the same physics as yourself to determine its behaviour is going
to have to kludge it in some way to get it to behave, and guaranteed
there will be some scenarios where the kludge factor just doesn't fit
with the way your car deals with it.

I believe the ability to tailor the AI in GPL to acurately match your
own performance is the best ever. This is done with an after market
add-on, but it gives the ability to adjust all drivers and get a very
good spread accross a field.

I like to setr it so I always have at least 3-4 fast driver...someone
to catch.

My only downside with the GPL AI is that after a while at the same
circuit it does get a little predictable, ie you begin to know where
they are slow and fast, but I guess thats real in racing too.

Yeah, great driving if you're not in front of them and
they're faster 'cause they'll push you out of the track.

AIs are driving like you're not there.

Um, I like LFS but the AI is brutal.  I feel like I just did a cage match
with Goldberg everytime I race that game...

Viper Racing I agree with.  Damn, I really must reinstall that game this
weekend :)
