That could be the problem. I don't believe I've heard anyone else report this

I've had this happen when I stack more cars in a race. It has NEVER
happened to me with the original field sizes. Have you alttered the
track.txt files to race more cars than the default for the track?
I believe Handy^Man correctly diagnosed my problem. If you leave the game
paused when you accelerate time it won't finish (and you can't return to the
track either).
