Tired of the demolition AI drivers in GPL?  How many times have you been in
the top 5 only to have one of the demolition drivers knock you out of the
race?  In a few seconds, you go from top 5 to last, because GPL won't let
you reset (Shift-R) because of the "Track is not clear"-bug.  How many
starts have been ruined for you, by having your opponents lock wheels with
you.  You can't escape their trap by resetting, because you simply reappear
back in their well-executed trap.  Then GPL retires you against your will,
because you can't move for a few seconds.  It's one against 19 (at the
highest setting), and the only way to beat those odds is to use the one
advantage you have over them, the reset.  You can knock them off of the
track.  They get stuck, and you can reset.  You continue on your way while
they stay there.  I'm looking for effective strategies on doing so.  The
ones I've found so far:

Ram:  This maneuver can knock one of the demolition drivers out (way out)
without much effort.  You follow a car along a straight part of the track.
When the demolition driver slows down for a curve, then you rear-end them by
staying at full-speed without slowing for the curve.  If you time it just
right, you can usually knock the out of the race.  To make this maneuver
most effective, you stay as far as you can behind them while still being
able to catch-up with them when they slow down.  That way, there is the most
difference between your two speeds and the biggest collision.

Starting-line spaghetti:  This one is fun.  You jump the start on the race
to get ahead of everyone.  Then you either simply stop sideways in the
middle of the road or (if you're good) you turn around and hit the pack
head-on.  With this maneuver, you can usually knock-out half of the
demolition drivers.

Wave and swerve:  When a demolition driver is following close, hit the
spacebar to wave your arm.  That lets him know you want him to pass.  Then,
side-swipe him as he is coming around.  Sometimes, you can knock him out of
the race.

Head-on hijinx:  Driving the track backwards, and hitting the oncoming
demolition drivers is effective and it's great fun.  The unfortunate problem
is that it usually gets you the big DQ.  Any suggestions on how to avoid the
DQ while doing this would be appreciated.

Improvements to this strategy?  I haven't gotten very good at knocking the
other cars off of the track without spinning-out myself.  Any suggestions
would be appreciated.

Finally, it's you against 19 drivers with inhuman precision, so any strategy
is fair.

Hi,

ahem, maybe the best strategy for you might be racing in training-mode ?

I don't think there is any better place to learn this kind of skill than
VROC.

Last night I was racing at Mosport and I messed up the hairpin which meant
the guy behind got a good run at me going up the back straight. No problem,
I thought, nobody would try and pass when we are going 170 mph towards a
jump but sure enough...... I watched in amazement as he tried to jump over
the top of my car.

Shift - R for both of us and guess what - he beat me to it and gained a
place. Maybe he did realise what he was doing after all :-)

It is amazing what you can do with good car control.

To finish first - you must first finish.

I don't quite have any problems with the Demolition drivers except for when
they rear-end me under braking.  Maybe raising my hand would tell them to pass?

Once again, I never seem to have any of these problems with the AI that
some of you keep reporting.  Did you edit the .ini files for the AI
perhaps?  Also, I would hardly call not letting you magically re-appear
on the track in front of oncoming traffic with a shift-r a bug.

Still curious,

I suggest viewing replays of each collision with ai from an external
viewpoint.  I think you're likely to find that the problem is... ahem... not
them.

rob.

ps.  The 'Track is not clear' bug is not a bug.

You should do this in VROC.
I bet you will gain alota new friends ;-)
