GPL & Fuel consumption

by John » Sat, 18 Dec 1999 04:00:00

Does anyone know if fuel consumption in GPL is constant or rpm based? I ran
a long race at Watkins Glen and set my fuel level in the setup screen to be
one lap more than the race length. I knew that that amount would cut it
short so while I was in the lead I short shifted about 1,000-2,000 RPM lower
than the optimum power band on my Ferrari. I figured that as in real life
that if I short shifted I would get a lot more mileage out of the car.
Unfortunately the car still ran out of gas on the last lap while I was in
the lead. Luckily for me though I was able to cost through the last 5 turns
and still finish first! :-)

Anyway if anyone knows about the fuel consumption in GPL and how it works
please let me know.

It's based on Revs, Try not to spin the wheels either it just wastes
fuel.

If it is based on revs then why did I run out of fuel? I carefully made sure
I was doing a lot of short shifting several thousand RPM earlier.

It was interesting because with short shifting I was loosing about 1 seconds
a lap over my normal fast lap times. If you figure an average race of about
18 laps at the Glen that works out to over 18 seconds wasted to save about 1
gallon of gas. I think next time I'm going to just fill the car with a few
extra gallons and forget the short shifting bit! :-)

In each track in the Tracks folder you'll find a track.ini file. By reading
this file, it seems to me that the fuel consumption is constant. One lap
results in a fixed amount of fuel consumption.

Im almost 100% it is for the AI, not for us.  It has been like that in all
Papyrus sims.  I would speculate that it is calculated on many factors,
mostly all related to the engine revs.

The main point is to always take out more, as the estimation is just simply
innacurate.  That's all.

I believe it's rpm based, but you can easily test it for yourself.  Put
1 gal of fuel in during practice and then try seeing how far you get
when hammering it compared to pootling around in first gear.  I bet you
go further with the latter method before engine gives up.

Put 1 or even 10 gallons of gas in the car and rev the engine in the
pits without moving and you'll run out of gas in due time.
Your driving style will effect the fuel consumption.

Maybe we should have races where you have to have 8-9 laps worth of fuel
for a 10 lap race. You would have to use some kind of racing strategy to
be fast. Know when and how long you can push it and still be able finish
the race, it would make the racing interesting in the final laps.
It wouldn't be the 100% full out suicide runs for the whole race we see
now.

it's coast, but the thing is that 5 turns at the glen is almost a whole lap?

Yeah...and that's a LONG way to be coasting...let's see...the 90...the lefty
before it....the righty before that...the speed trap...big bend...you
coasted from big bend??  That's more than half a lap!  When you say you
coasted, did you mean it started sputtering real bad there, or was the
engine completely dead?  Cause when it starts sputtering, it's not much
better than coastin'.

Big bend (aka Fast Bend) is the right (T-6) right before the left (T-7)
that's before the 90 (T-8). Or, It's the right (T-6) just after the
speed trap (T-5).  The turn that you say it is is actually called the
Chute (T-4).  There was another name for the Chute, but I can't remember
it right now.
