TIR Installation Problem and Won't Run

by bertr » Sun, 17 Nov 2002 05:44:20

Someone in a previous thread mentioned that Total Immersion racing
(TIR)  requires DX8.1b and _only_ 8.1b to run.  Others responded that
they've installed MS Combat Flight Sim 3 on their computers (which
surruptitiously installs DX 8.2), and TIR still runs fine on their
systems.

Well, based on this, I went out and bought TIR.  I also have CFS3
installed on my system (along with, presumably, DX 8.2), and I cannot
get TIR to run.

When installing, I get the message asking whether I want to install DX
8.1b.  If I say NO, the installation routine ends.  So, I said YES.
(Luckily, I have GoBack on my system, so I can live a little
dangerously...)  It still won't install.  When I say YES to installing
8.1b, it says that it's successfully installed, but does not proceed to
the routine to install the actual game.

However, I found that in the "is" subdirectory on the CD, there's
another setup.exe file which installs the game.  So, I run it.  Now,
although the game is installed in my hard drive, when I try to run the
game, I get a message that "DX 8.1b is required -- Do I want to
install?"

So, for those of you who also have CFS3 (or DX 8.2) on your system, how
exactly did you get TIR installed, and get it to run?  Is there a patch
that addreses this?

Thanks!
Bert

I have DX8.2 (via CFS3) and I simply installed TIR and ran it.  Not sure
what the problem is for you, perhaps is OS specific?  I'm running WinXP
home.

Since installing the game, have you tried installing DX8 from the TIR cd by
running dxsetup.exe?

Haven't tried that, Joe.  Thx for that suggestion.

FWIW, I'm running Win 98SE.

TIR Installation Problem and Won't Run

Joe,

I tried your suggestion -- same results.  In fact, clicking on DirectX in
Control Panel indicates that I still have DirectX 8.2 installed.  Judging from
the speed of the DX 8.1b "installation", my guess is that the DX installation
routine reads that I have a "newer" version installed and does not install over
it.

So, what version of Direct X does your system indicate you have after
installing TIR?

Probably should mention my system specs......

Athlon 1700XP
512 Megs RAM
Radeon 8500LE/Omega drivers
Win 98SE

Any help would be appreciated.

TIR Installation Problem and Won't Run

by Joe M » Sun, 17 Nov 2002 07:22:54

I'm looking at DX Diagnostic Tool now and it confirms that I have DX 8.2
(4.08.02.0134).  I didn't expect the DX setup to change your DX to 8.1 since
you cannot go back with DX, I just thought it might fool the exe for TIR
into thinking it was installed (shot in the dark but worth trying).  I
haven't played a game yet that doesn't recognize a LATER version of DX (I'm
talking since DX5).

I'm really thinking this might be OS related since that's our primary
difference (aside from video card which isn't the issue if it's working
under DX8.2 in other games).

My specs:
AMD 1600+
512 MB RAM
GF4 Ti 4400 (40.72 Cert. drivers)

I wish I could help but I just don't have any ideas.  I'm sure they'll patch
it but that's no consolation for you.  All I can say is that it's worth the
wait since it's a fun game.

TIR Installation Problem and Won't Run

by Steve Smit » Sun, 17 Nov 2002 09:25:09

Joe,

It's almost impossible to uninstall *any* ver. of DirectX.  I once made the
mistake of installing an early beta of 8.1 and when it screwed up my system,
I tried everything from 3rd-party uninstallers to hand-editing the Registry.
No luck.  My system was hosed until the public release of 8.1 several months
later.

It's unusual that any s/w won't run on a *later* ver. of DX, but it sounds
like TIR is the exception.  Too bad; I wanted to try it.  Wish I had known,
too, abt. the surreptitious install of 8.2 w. CFS3.  Too late now....

Nobody ever accused MS of playing by the rules...theirs or anybody else's.

Come to think, I just got Rallisport Challenge.  I wonder of the DX on its

Not sure about that, but it's easy enough to check.

Go to Control Panel, Double-click on Direct X.

TIR Installation Problem and Won't Run

The CD has 8.1b (4.8.1.881 in dxdiag).

You can revert to the original version of DirectX by re-installing Windows
over the top (98 and ME I think - not sure about XP).

Andi.

TIR Installation Problem and Won't Run

by bertr » Sun, 17 Nov 2002 23:35:52

I'm not sure if I want to resort to such a drastic measure for just one game.
What else would have to be re-installed after re-installing Windows?

And besides, I then wouldn't be able to run MS CFS3, which requires 8.2.

Thanks for the idea.
Bert
