IWCCCARS Virus Hoax...

by Tony Joh » Sat, 24 Feb 1996 04:00:00

All --

It turns out that this rumored virus on the IWCCCARS Project site is a
complete hoax.  Without going into a very long story, suffice to say
that this whole thing is the product of someone's mind and not based
in any reality.

If any of you are in doubt about this, consider that there has been,
to date, only one "virus" report out of downloads numbering in the
hundreds of thousands since IWCCCARS went public.

For your continued *** safety, we have instituted DAILY virus
checks using the most recent copies of both the Thunderbyte and
McAfee's virus scanners and have not found a single thing to date
except a clean bill of health.

Thanks!

Actually, I did find a virus on disks that I had downloaded files from
IWCCCARS on.  However, since you do checks daily, I will assume that they
didn't come from this site.  I just wanted to let everyone know that
there was a possibility that they came from this location.  I will look
into other possible contamination sites.

Sorry about the confusion,

Randy Johnson

Randy, in case you had the wrong impression, I don't think Tony was
fingering you as someone who started the hoax.  He was referring to a
disgruntled ex-IWCCCARS contributor who had posted a hoax message to
Compuserve.  I do not know if this when this occured relative to your
virus alert post.
