MGPRS2 Link Multiplayer Help

by Jon Petersso » Sun, 12 Mar 2000 04:00:00

I'm trying to link two PC's with a null modem cable in MGPRS2, and it's
driving me insane.

On "master", I select COM1 Master and press the funny looking button. The
resulting screen says Connection: COM1 Master, Split screen: no, no, Screen:
1 player link.

On "slave", I select COM2 Slave and press the funny looking button. The
resulting screen says Connection: COM2 Slave, Split screen: no, no, Screen:
2 player link.

The OK button is greyed out on both computers.

If I select Split screen on slave, I get Screen: 3 player link. Nothing
happens on master (still Screen: 1 player link).

If I select Split screen on master, I get Screen: 2 player link, and slave
changes to Screen: 3 player link.

It is as if slave knows that they are connected, but master does not.

Also, if slave exits, nothing happens on master, but if master exits, I get
"You are the new master - Petersson disconnected" on slave (plus a hand and
sometimes an envelope that weren't there before).

It doesn't matter which computer I set up as master or slave. I works
identically both ways.

Please help! I really want this setup to work for my Australian Grand Prix
party tonight.

Talking to myself here...

I've solved the problem by going back to the original CD version. Seems that
both 1.05 and 1.06 are broken when it comes to null modem play. Is this
true? And is there any patch level where null modem play does work?

IIRC, from the development papers I've read, it's true.  There seems to be a
problem with having a master/slave on two different COM port, which of
course makes Null-modem racing impossible.
