Nascar 1999 / Voodoo3. Can you help? Any luck?

by Tony Gaylor » Fri, 21 May 1999 04:00:00

Has anyone got Nascar 1999 (3dfx version) to work with there Voodoo 3
cards? I have had good luck when it comes down to running most glide
games with exception of a few EA titles but this one just doesn't want
to boot up. After the install, I clicked on the 3dfx 1999 version and
immediately it says,"Program has performed an illegal operation." so I
clicked the details tab and at the top in the details it says,"NR 1999
DEMO 3DFX caused an invalid page fault in module GLIDE2X.DLL.

I called Siera and they gave me the talk that everyones had good luck
with N1999 and the V3 but could not help me with the demo. Basicly the
gal said,"Buy it, if it don't work, theres a 30 day money back
guarentee". Eehh.........

By the way, system consists of:
Gateway Celeron 466
128 SDRAM
Current V3 drivers and DirectX6.1
Voodoo3 2000 PCI

Thanks for your help. I would love to see Nascar running at full details
on this machine!

Best Regards,
Tony Gaylord

Tony

You will have to use the 3dfx Dos version in N99.  I get the exact same
error message when I try to execute the windows version.  I have done a
fresh install of Win 98 and N99 but still the same problem.  Looks like the
Voodoo3 glide.dll is not as completely backward compatible as 3dfx says.

Thanks for your reply Don. Is there a DOS version for the N99 "demo" though, or
just the retail version?

Thank you!

The full version of NR1999 will fine with the Voodoo3, as long as the
opening movie is being played.  However if you do a full install and
delete the movie from the NR1999 directory (the file is nr1999.smk)
the Windows 3dfx EXE will crash with that error.  Because the demo
doesn't have the intro, I believe it will crash on the Voodoo3 as
well.

Did you delete the NR1999.SMK intro video?

Eric,
No, didn't delete the intro movie. Can this file be obtained from
somewhere and placed into the correct path?

And to Revved:
This.bat entry your refering to, would it help in this case with the
demo?

Thanks you guys for your help.
I really want to see N99 with the V3............

That was in response to Don who was having the same problem with the
full version.  The full version of the game runs just fine on the
Voodoo3, unless you delete the movie at which point this crash will
occur.  As I responded to you, the demo doesn't come with the movie
and as such will have the crash on the Voodoo3.

Basically: 'Movie -> Game Runs' 'No Movie -> Game Crashes'

FYI, the demo is hardcoded not to run a movie so downloading a
NR1999.SMK will not help.  It's a good idea for Voodoo3 users with the
full-version who want to save a little drive space and make the game
load faster however...

Revved,
To me it sounds like theres no way then to get the demo to work then,
correct? Eric mentioned that the demo was not coded to play the intro so
even trying to implement this dummy file wouldn't get the demo to work
would it?

With ALL of the N2 and 99 sites out there with all these utilites etc, I'm
surprised no ones made a patch to get the demo to work on the Voodoo3.

Thanks for your help, let me know what you think.

Eric.. could this be the case of people having problems on the NROS with
Voodoo3's when they install the NROS package with NR99 ?  I heard numbers of
people when Im guiding with such a problem, so is there a solution for that
?

No, any problems they may be experiencing are completely unrelated.

Eric and all,

Something comes to mind here then about the demo and the missing movie
intro. If that file had been pulled from the demo, does that mean that NO
3dfx cards will work with the demo? I'm not challenging you here or
anything but if that was the case then why does the beggining of the demo
perform a system check and when it does detect a 3dfx card, it alows you
to then select a 3DFX version of the demo? If you correct about the
missing file then is it pretty safe to say that no one has played the
demo in Glide after Sierra pulled the movie intro? Wether it be
Voodoo1,V2 or V3?

Once again, not challenging you but after all on most 3d FTP servers (3d
files, VoodooExtreme) it says,"Glide API".

Thanks for all your help.

Tony Gaylord

No, the problem is limited to the Voodoo3 and probably the Banshee (I
haven't tested the latter, but I'm pretty sure it will happen there as
well).  The NR1999 demo will however runs fine on the Voodoo 1 and 2.
To be clear it's not really that the missing movie actually breaks the
demo, just that the playing of the movie in the full-version gets
around the problem.

The system check at the beginning doesn't check to see if a 3dfx card
is in the system (AFAIK it just verifies your OS and the amount of
disk space you have available), so both the software and 3dfx options
are available an all machines.

You are absolutely right.  Reinstalling the smk file fixed the problem.  I'm
still kicking myself because while I did notice it would run from the CD I
never clued in to the fact that it was the intro video that needed to be
avail.

Also thanks to rrevved for the greatly reduced .smk file.  The original 54
meg file was deleted to save space.
