TOFU stats for 2002-12-08

Hi folks,

below you will find the updated TOFU stats for last week. I
think I have to find another way of sorting the results as
seeing Nick there on top (you made it, mate) seems a bit unfair
to him, given that his noise index is approaching 1 which is
quite good.

Enjoy,

Uwe

######################################################################
TOP TOFUS of rec.autos.simulators

Analyzed 1236 articles posted since 2002-12-08 (7 days total).

The first column shows the total kilobytes of quoted text found
in posts by the author (last column). The second column
contains the "noise index", which I define as the ratio of
genuine new material to old, quoted text found in all postings.
The third column contains the total number of articles posted
by the author.

The fourth column shows us the percentage of new material to
stuff that was simply quoted from older messages.

To improve your spot in the rankings or ideally, get out the
top 10 altogether, please consult the following URL:

your fellow netizens will be most grateful for it. ;-)

Woohoo! I'd just like to thank a couple of people quickly. The guys at SBDT
for the excellent GTR2002, which has made me write posts in this newsgroup
recently. The guys at Papyrus for getting me into the whole
rec.autos.simulators thing in the first place. You guys, for talking about
interesting stuff all the time. Oh, and let's not forget the inimitable
PAPADOC, whose insane ramblings about politics got me this award. Jeez, 130
postings? What the hell am I playing at?

Congrats Nick.  Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.  Make sure you give Uwe
your mailing address so he can ship the trophy.  Really swell man, :)

You are apparently assuming that we should all agree with the poster of
that article on what constitutes proper quoting.  I don't.

So, if we were to take some TOFU, the textured kind of course, the plain
untextured TOFU is just so...plain,  anyhow, if we were to take this
textured TOFU and mix it with oh say regular ground beef, would that make it
anyless harmful?  Sure I know mixing the textured TOFU with Ground Beef will
disrupt the little texture patterns on the tofu but my point is,....if we
had some SPAM maybe and made a  SPAM and TOFU sandwich.  With some lovely
cheese and mayo...would that make me a faster sim racer?

Woohoo, I have the highest noise index!  Uh... is that good or bad?

BTW WTF is TOFU anyway?  TMA!  (Too Many Acronyms!)

I did a Google search and other than the obvious I came up with
"Triangle Origami Folders United", of which I am pretty sure I am not a
member, and "The OFU" magazine, which has something to do with Anime.
So unless you are accusing me of being an anime cartoon I am still
confused about the meaning of your post.

The way I see it, people can choose to quote parts of posts that are
irrelevant to their replies, not properly quote inline, etc and that's
fine and dandy.  OTOH, I personally don't read posts that require 5
minutes of scanning the entire body of the message to find the
person's replay, either.

Also, while it may be petty, I tend to value the opinions of people
who are able to post in an intelligent and organized manner, even if I
disagree with them.  The 3 things that tend to make me ignore a
person, even if they have something of value to contribute to a
discussion, are poor spelling, poor grammar, and poor netiquette.

I've never understood people who quote entire messages because it
simply isn't an effective way of communicating.  By parsing and
editing someone's message before replying to it, you facilitate the
conversation and make your post easier to understand by showing
exactly what it is that you're replying to.  If someone quotes 200
lines of text and sticks a one line replay at the top it forces
everyone reading that post to read 200 lines of text that are in all
likelihood largely irrelevant to the person's response.

TOFU stats for 2002-12-08

by Schoone » Tue, 10 Dec 2002 09:55:05

I typically quote entire messages for the following reasons:
- It ensure nothing is taken out of context.  Some people like to quote a
sentence and twist it to suit their needs, I'd rather quote it all to be
fair.
- Some news servers don't maintain messages very long so having part of the
discussion in the reply helps those that cannot follow all the thread.
- It keeps things in context when the threading is broken or goes off topic.

The stats are great but I have no intention of changing my postings to get
off the list.  This is a free open discussion group, and I don't feel my
posts ruin the use of news groups as much as the name calling and profanity
that many people find a need to use (not specific to this group).  Common
sense means more to me than some rules developed by a netiquette group.

good to see a discussion going on that topic. I think tofu has
a nice ring to it, even if it's taken from a German acronym.
I'll add an explanation of the term TOFU to next week's stats.

Cheers,

Hey Jason,
do you believe it's him? I wouldn't think so ;-) Anyway, the
tofu rankings are there for open fun and ridicule of all top
scorers ;-), and I won't change the subject line so it should
be pretty easy to set up a filter in your newsreader if you're
not interested to receive them in the future. I might also
change to a bi-weekly schedule if you'd rather see that (gives
the script more postings to analyze to the outcome will be more
representative).

Cheers,

uwe
