N2002 Why can't we turn off drivng aids for leagues???

by St » Wed, 26 Jun 2002 10:57:25

Hey guys,

Just completed 2 league races at Sears Pt this weekend and some of
the guys were running abs, automatic transmission, traction control
which is at least a 2 second advantage per lap for me at least. We
don't have any rules against doing so but the reason is there would
not be a way to prevent guys from doing it. I wish we could shut all
that stuff off.
Why doesn't Papyrus have a way to block driving aids on the server
end like you can limit to the***pit view only etc. Just doesn't make
sense. Let's hear from some league racers ,maybe we can get this
fixed.

I've found just the opposite results.  Running those things slow me
down for some reason.   And the ABS doesn't stop as fast as running
without it...if you don't slide your tires.

Here we go again. Driving aids are forced by the game if you have brakes or
throttle assigned to a button. That's why you can't turn them off. Now as
far as the aids being faster I'm not really sure on that. Throttle control
maybe I have not really tried it, but ABS and auto shift don't make me any
faster, only slower.

My understanding was that in the hands of a slightly experienced driver
Papyrus purposely made using the driving aids a hindrance  and not a help to
lap times.  They are there to help get the novice drivers up and running
without having him hit every wall  on the track.

Traction control will always result in slower laps.  I tested this for about
50 laps durning practice, and as soon as I turned it off my Lap Times
improved by 3 seconds, even though I was slipping and sliding all over the
place.

I drove the RASCAR race with no aids.  I did use traction control the first
50 laps of practice while I was learning the track layout, but then turned
it off.

In retrospect, I do wish I would have used auto-shifting.  Maybe.  Still not
sure on that.

I can agree with blocking all of the aids, except automatic shifting.  This
is not an advantage in Nascar (at all), and some people's controller
configurations or physical needs may require it.

Yep, ABS can get you into REAL trouble.

Sometimes the only way you can stop a spin is to lock up the front tires,
and with the ABS you can't do that.  You will spin no matter how hard you
mash the pedal.

ABS is no helper at all.

pretty much what I figured, but I had never tested it to know for sure.

I use auto shift for the roadies to keep from blowing up. I guess its my
drag racing back ground. I wind them out way to far to last a whole race. :)

Probably because Papy knows that, honestly, driving aids are of no use to
the driver that can get around the track without them. The guys that have to
use the aids will not be any faster than someone who is good at the track
and can get around without them. Auto ***: doesn't know the optimum shift
points. ABS: surges really bad near lockup causing more problems than it
fixes. Traction control: a good driver on roadies (I do anyway) likes the
ability to power slide when necessary and TC will prevent this.

Our league ran Sears Point last Thursday as the last race of our Spring
season, I don't know who or who did not run with aids on and I won by over
half a lap not using anything but autoclutch (which I use everywhere since I
don't have a clutch pedal on my TSW...) I am not super fast there by any
stretch, but surely was putting down times that would have beaten anyone

and clear).

I can't agree with it.  I don't think there's any advantage using the aids, so
I don't have problems with people using them.  I still run auto shifting in
N2002, and I've also turned on the racing line occasionally.

I think we all use the racing line from time to time.  I know I do.

and I've also turned on the racing line occasionally.

I run with it on. Not to tell me where I should be, but to know where the
other guys are going. :)
