OT win95 HELP! damn oem SN#

by Dave Henri » Sun, 25 Jun 2000 04:00:00

I offered to help a friend get his old computer back up and working, the
printer wasn't communicating, the modem wasn't working...stuff like that.
Someone had installed win98 over win95, no problem there, but I finally gave
into the "start over solution" and used the IBM Aptiva disk included with
the system to "re-install" everything.  BIG MISTAKE!  Instead of just
re-creating a mirror copy, it re-installed everything, that was ok until I
asked the girl where her Win95 serial number was....It is probably at her
mom's but I'm not betting they can find it.
The computer has been in the family for several years, P200 Ibm Aptiva with
a Mitsumi 4x cdrom and a dirty floppy drive.
Any of you Service types know if I can extract the serial number from her
win95 companion cd that was included with the system?
I had a used copy of win95 and I could just "skip" the serial # the
install would still continue, but this damn aptiva (shoulda asked what kind
it was before I volunteered) won't get past the serial number screen w/o
shutting down.  The girl is calling her mom but like I said, I'm not
confident the license agreement page will be found.

Is the original install still working in safe mode?
(dont have time to read full post)
If so, check out the computer settings(leftclick my computer, and click
properties). The serial number there is the one to use (if it's the OEM
number you actually ask for; NNNN-OEM-NNNNN-NNNNN or something).

No you can't extort the number from the cd, cos any number works(that is a
correct serial), ehhrm, what I mean is that the setupprog calculates if the
serial is ok.

If the number is without oem, and in two parts, its very easy but I cannot
still say it. Search for it...

Best shot is to read their old number in failsafe mode (or maybe someone
elses...(did I write that?)), because It's their real number.

Good luck!
