CeleRon FAQ........Read and Upgrade !

by Chath » Sat, 10 Oct 1998 04:00:00

As many people are thinking of upgrading their systems for GPL i
thought i would put together a CeleRon FAQ.
I upgraded to a CeleRon 266 original with no level2 cache in
June and have been running it at 4  x  112  Mhz  448 Mhz
ever since with rock solid results.

My system specs:

CeleRon 266  SL2QG             4  x  112 Mhz 448 Mhz
Abit BX  Mobo                  Latest BIOS EG
LGS PC 100 7J SDRAM 128 Meg    works at CAS 2 or 3 up to 124Mhz
Diamond Stealth 220            4 meg  61Mhz  [default 55Mhz] 1.36 BIOS
Voodoo1 4 meg                  57 mhz   [default 50 Mhz]
32X Cd Rom
SoundBlaster 16
GP1 wheel...no pedals

GPL in practice/training mode stays on 36 fps locked with Stealth 220
on all curcuits at 640 x 480.In race with 19AI at back of grid frame rate

drops about10 fps for  1/4 lap  then back to 36 fps solid.
I turn off the Anti-Aliasing on Stealth220 for a much clearer  view
otherwise all graphics are on to the max.

Voodoo1 is about 5 fps slower.

Not bad for a usd 75-  CPU.

The newer celeRon 300A with 128 Kb full CPU speed level2 cache would be
better, but the best i've heard is to get a   .25 micron P2 300  serial
SL2YK [retail]  SL2W8 [OEM] and run at  4.5 x  112  504 Mhz as these
CPU's  are  original P2 450 thrown out by Intel as P2 300  due to market
demands; these are multiplier locked at 4.5.
Abit BX BH page has all the info.

GP2 has a new lease of life with this CeleRon as i can race nearly all
circuits in FULL DETAIL at 25.6 FPS.
It's a real joy to see GP2 run like a Greyhound.

Excellent info... but based on the difficulty in getting exact spec
parts (such as the SL2QG C266, which I think has dried up in the
supply pipeline), plus the benchmark indications that the new Riva TNT
video chipsets like a little L2 cache, I'd advise most people to grit
thier teeth and fork up the $170 or so for a Celeron 300A.

Mine runs just fine at 450 (100x4.5), and my old 10ns SDRAM tolerates
the 100MHz FSB.  Good balance for my particular situation... I paid a
bit more for the CPU but was able to use my old-ish 64MB SDRAM, plus
the hardware folks tell me my CL Riva TNT will like the cache.

>Anyone cared to show me how to overclock my C266?

Depends on what mobo you have.  Basically you need to set the bus
speed to 100MHz instead of it's current (I gather) 66MHz.  This may
impact other system devices, however (PCI and AGP busses, plus
memory).  Info on this should be in your mobo manual.  If you have an
LX mobo, I think you're hosed (it might let you do a 75MHz bus,
however).  Browse thru tomshardware.com for excruciating detail <g>.
