As for the game... I took one of Skip Barber's courses (Sebring in
1988), and I can't possibly say enough good things about his school.
It's not cheap, but they really deliver an experience you would never
forget. How that will translate into a PC sim is hard to guess.
Personally, I'll buy a copy just on the strength of my experience with
their school. (Of course, I've bought two PC games and one steering
wheel with Mario's name on them just because of my respect for Mario,
and they didn't work out very well.)

2000 may be a banner year for new sims... I sure
hope so after the dissappointment that was 1999.
Oh, sure, there were a few good games released,
but nothing that broke new ground in terms of
realism.

Worked for me as quoted. Odd.

Part of the game claims to take you through learning heel-and-toe
downshifting. How are they going to do that without a clutch? I guess
they can get it half right by having all those with split-axis pedals
getting the simultaneous braking and throttle blip actions sorted out.

It works fine if you make sure to get the 'pc' on the next line.

I would think the clutch would be optional, as it is for some racers. Fine
if you have the hardware and want to use it, but it should work just fine
without a clutch. The sim value would be essentially the same as breathing
the gas on GPL's up-shift. In fact, I think Papy only got this half right:
downshifts are easier in GPL than are upshifts. Anyway, blipping the gas in
neutral would be difficult to simulate with today's hardware. Maybe the
first tap down would put the box in neutral, allowing you to blip and match.
The next tap down should shift into the lower gear. The trouble is, I like
to skip gears while downshifting, especially given that I'm blipping for
each one. A good implementation would select a gear close to a good match
for my revs and road speed. IMHO. This would be a nice addition for GPL. I
wonder how long it would take the hot-lappers to get smooth again. :-)
Michael.
