As you know there are many web page building applications out on the
market.  Building a simple web page is as easy as cut and past, drag and
drop, clicking a button, ect.. If the complete idiot can't build a web
page then they don't deserve to live it's so simple.

However, since the general public gets scared easy when big words are
used...  You can charge "ANYTHING" you want to build a web page.

$450.00 is the most I've seen but I bet there are many people that
will pay it without a second thought.  shoot,  I just talked to a person
that's building a sight for a small company here. She's charging $100.00
per page.  That ain't bad. The bad thing is that she just picked up her
first web building application (ms publisher) and is using that only
because she thinks it's the only one on the market.

You should charge $400.00 and take their customers away from them :-)

Could *I* charge $450!?

by rob » Wed, 17 Mar 1999 04:00:00

Just about 4 years ago while I was in college I got a job answering
the phones at an isp.  Because we were an isp some people wanted
web pages.  I borrowed a book on HTML, did a little page, showed my
boss that I could write web pages, and whammo, I was the company
web programmer.  They charged $40/hr for my work, though of course
I didn't get  very much of that.  I remember one guy who wanted to sell
children's books online... after I finished his page, he came in to
look at it.  I sat him in front of the computer and he was having some
trouble.. turns out he didn't know how to use a mouse!  One after
another, customers would start calling and asking why their sites
weren't making money.  They thought if they just made a page they
would get rich.  To give an example, one guy was selling a compilation
of stories about his childhood until he decided to revamp the site and
sell magnets guaranteed to cure any disease.  Before long I got
disallusioned with the 'gouging for web services' business and got
another job doing something else.

I didn't think this stuff was still possible, though...

Could *I* charge $450!?

by Graeme Nas » Wed, 17 Mar 1999 04:00:00

All my friends here have crappy little jobs behind the till at McDonalds
or Sainsburys or whatever (I'm only 17 remember!).....

But I couldn't be bothered with that so I do web design for small
companies around here. At the moment it's just for people I know and on
recommendations but at around 40 - $60 a page I'm earning more than
enough to get by (i.e ten times more than my friends <G>) I was
introduced to HTML in mid-1997 and hand-code most of it myself so I'm
not exactly one of the people you mentioned who try to work their way
through a frontpage wizard...! Especially since now I'm working with
Java, CGI and ASP's.

Actually it's going very well - Soon I'm setting up a registered company
and getting my own domain (Did you notice the original poster called
itself a "Very Large Company" and still didn't have its own domain?)

I'd like to run it full-time but of course I've got to do well in school
first. At the moment I have barely enough time for it because of school
and sport and that little thing called a social life :-)

Thanks for the manifesto, Graeme, but the discrepency here is "webpage"
and "website".  I've heard of companies forking up $4000 for a complete
website, meaning servers, cgi, POP accounts, and the web content.  Usually,
for a set of "webpages" companies will go in the range of $400 to $1000,
depending on the savyness of the web "developer"...
The real smart ones charge by the hour, then you can really ring it up.

Gary

P.S. the data in this post reflects my own experience, please done post a
ton of single line examples of people cherging different amounts.  this is
kind of off topic anyway.
