Steering wheel problem

I have a Thrustmaster Nascar Charger wheel, gameport type, no pedals.
My problem is this. If the wheel is connected my system won't boot. If I
disconnect it and then boot up then reconnect it it's okay. What causes
this?

IRQ conflicts, maybe?  Check that your gameport isn't using the same
IRQ as another critical(video, sound, etc) interface.
Longshot - do you have a built-in game port, as well as one on your
sound card?  That would cause conflicts as well...
