Trans Am tragedy(mosport) any fallout yet?

by Dave Henri » Sun, 27 May 2001 11:38:16

I'm just now watching the Trans Am Race from last week on tape.  I only
got a portion taped, I was hoping I missed the wreck that killed the driver
Mike Gagliardo. But it just came up.
first let me say I'm not one who usually comes in late and rips
officials...but the S-L-O-W response time of both trackside marshalls and
emergency crews  was frightening.  I know CART and other series have their
own emergency crews, but what about Tran Am?
The only positive I can see right now about that situation is that the
race-coverage producers didn't show 100 different replays of the disaster.
This could be because they are more limited with the # of camera's they
bring compared to F1 or Nascar, but they truly showed restraint.
I haven't seen any reports about the accident other than the first
newsbreaks...Are the track and the Series in
legal danger?
Truly a sad event...my condolences to the family and friends of Mike
Gagliardo.

That's weird, internally all the marshalls are patting each other on the
back for a job well done?! I wasn't able to see the situation from were
i was, the outside of ten, but when the extraction crew and the two
ambulances left they sure as shit left in a hurry. Then when i watched
the race first thing i though was the turn 1 and 2 crews should have
been waving yellow like mad because of the dust. Insiders note: there
was like 2 or 3 novice marshalls at each turn, think that helped any. Oh
well, death is all part of the game...

They left in a hurry, but from the tape,  the leaders made one lap at full
speed before taking the full course yellow, and then made another lap at
caution speeds behind the pace car....Other than wave thier arms and join
them in the help symbol, the marshalls did not approach either car until
after the pack went by a 2nd time.  As the cameras cut back to a pit lane
shot, ONLY then, two laps after the accident, did the first ambulance roll
by...

Justin Bell started to comment on that, but then the "corporate racer"
mode kicked in and he backed away slightly from his first comments.

Unfortuately there was nothing that could of helped Gags survive and the
Mosport safety team saved Gary Longo's life.

Trans Am tragedy(mosport) any fallout yet?

Outside those 2 series (and maybe Nascar) most others (including F1) rely on
volunteer emergency crews.  And likely they won't be sitting in the
emergency vehicle with the engine running ready to jump into action.
Because of Mosport's layout there isn't as many location for emergency crews
to get out onto the track as there would be at some CART style courses
either.

If the wreck happened in turn 1 the closest crew would likely be in the
pitlane.

Canada doesn't have as many lawyers per captia that the USA has.  I imagine
all the drivers have to sign some sort of waver.

True, on the upside the other driver was upgraded over the weekend an will
soon be transfered to a hospital in his home area.
