How come Carmageddon looks so bad?

by Ron Neelema » Mon, 30 Jun 1997 04:00:00

I think i have a problem with Carmageddon looking bad. I have a P100,
40MB and a Stealth 2000-3D 4MB-edo, 4sp-CDrom and did a medium install.
The screen looks very 'blocky' like vga instead of svga. In the game
options i can't seem to improve this by anything. The pics on the cd-box
look very realistic and don't come even near to my screen performance.
However, frame rates do seem to be ok.

Can anybody help?

That's probably because it *is* VGA - did you start with "carma
-hires" like it says in the instructions?

BTW, the SVGA frame rate sucks, but a 3DFX version is on the way. And
to restore granny and friends, visit www.carmageddon.com and get the
official***patch.

And a quick tip - use the Tow Truck once you get it - it's unstoppable
and indestructible. Or try Vlad's dragster - first time I drove it, I
flew about two miles over the sea and off the edge of the map :-)

:Can anybody help?

You don't have a big monitor do you? On my 21 incher even svga looks
like vga on my old 15inch.

Are you sure you have chosen the svga option (I know it sounds stupid,
but you'd be surprised......)

btw how is it? I liked the demo (even more than NFS2), what's the full
game like?

Your P100 puts you at the LOW end of the system requirement for
Carmageddon. Here is the spec sheet from the maker of Carmageddon:
==========================================================
            System Requirements
CD-ROM IBM PC & compatibles with Win 95 or MS-DOS 6.2 or above
Intel Pentium Processor required (P90 minimum)
8Mb RAM (16 Mb for Windows 95 version and Multiplayer Network game)
Quad speed CD-ROM drive with MSCDEX 2.25 and above
Hard Disk Space: 20Mb (minimum install)
VGA & SVGA Graphics support (1MB Graphics card required)
Supports SoundBlaster & 100% Compatible sound cards
Coming in August! The 3Dfx video card chipset patch!
==============================================================
You are running in VGA mode which is low resolution. When the 3DFX
patch arrives,in August you would be able to run in 640x480 with
incredible smoothness and detail if you have a 3DFX card.
Start saving up for one, you will love it.

Hmm, well maybe not with a P100.  For "incredible smoothness and
detail" you had better add a more powerful CPU.  Just speaking from
experience wrt the recent 3dfx patches and titles released...

I have a P166 MMX, 32 MB Ram, 2MB Graphics card, etc.  Although I love the
game play, I am not impressed with the graphics either.  I have everything
turned 'on' or set to always, installed it with the 'full install option'
(its a major hog) but I can't get it to come close to the presentation of
NFS2 or GP2.  I assumed that since you can drive 'everywhere' that
something had to give, and in this case it was the graphics.  The graphics
are not horrible, however I was a bit disappointed.

Bottom line is, I would still buy the game if I had it to do over again.
If the 3DFX will make it better, then all the better.

***! ***! I want more ***!!!!
