look at your filters and filter menu,
probably you have "show unread only"

I have a question too, I just started using Xnews, and being the lazy
individual that I am, I look for short cuts to everything.  However, I
cannot find a shortcut for marking all messages as read.  OE had that nice
little button you add to the toolbar and then you just click it once.  In
Xnews, it seems that I have to right click and select 'Mark all as read'.  
Is that the only way?
