I really would like to see the cars be able to rollover. Is there any way
that NASCAR 2 is able to do this, and will it be available on NASCAR3?

As soon as someone can come up with a realistic physics model to
simulate the millions of possible ways a car can react based on the
numerous tracks, conditions, speed and traffic. THEN have it work on
something less than a Cray SC at better than 8 frames a second so that
all crashes aren't in slo-mo nearly freezing the machine as it models
the roll to death. I hope they don't. I don't want the people with
a machine that can't handle it to start whining to Papyrus/Sierra.
NASCAR2 does not. N3 is TBD... One issue is the amount of processor
time needed to "do it right." It just won't do for a Papyrus sim to
have any pre-canned crash sequences. :-)
The other issue is NASCAR likes to de-emphasize the crashing, burning,
and dangerous aspects of the sport. (Frankly, I agree with them for
the most part, as I like to watch the racing much more than the
crashing...) However, the real cars do it on Sunday, and I'd like to
be able to capture that in our simulation.
(Of course, imagine the explosion of posts of replays on
alt.binaries.autos.simulators if spectacular crashes were
available...)

It would be pretty cool to see ol' Dale slide down the wall upside down
in N3 like he did at Daytona!

I still have a screen shot of me up on two wheels at Martinsville. I
hit the curb going into three, and the replay showed me up in the air.
I'll e-mail it if anyone wants it....

>Wouldn't 3D card support take the load off the processor?
Yes and no. Most 3D cards do not provide any "useful" geometry
acceleration (the matrix multiplies to transform points from model
space(s) to screen space). The real increase in allowing flips, rolls,
etc is the collision detection with several (many) parts of the car
and the ground, wall, catch fences, etc. Here, a 3D card will be of no
help.
The 3D cards do permit vastly nicer graphics operations, including
shading, bilinear filtering, alpha blending, etc. Currently, I'm not
aware of a 3D card who's geometry engine is faster and more capable
than doing those calculations with the FPU. (Once that's done, you're
way better off having a graphics card do the polygon drawing than
having the CPU have to handle that, especially given memory bandwidth
limitations.)
