Best "how to" book(s) for car setups & tuning?

Note:  shameful confession below...

I've been into race sims for a year or two, but have never found a
good "how to" source about setting up cars.  Each sim's documentation
has some info about what different components do, and some have a
little info on the steps involved in actually setting up, but for a
non-gearhead like me, it's never been sufficient to make me
comfortable that I'm following a logical progression in creating a car
setup, and really understand how to do it.

Thankfully, there have been many of you who've made your setups
available for different sims and I've unabashedly taken total
advantage of using others' setups, but I really want to learn how to
do it myself.  Unfortunately, I don't have tons of time to learn from
scratch, on my own...my available "sim seat" time is kind of limited.

I just got "Tune to Win" by Carroll Smith which appears to have lots
of info about how the various systems work, but does not attempt to
really step you through creating a setup.  Does "Prepare to Win" by
Smith really focus on that?  Unfortunately I can't find a *detailed*
description of that book and would like to know before I order it.

So, what are your suggestions for the most practical "how to" guides
or info sources...especially for those of us who don't have much
background on the subject.

Many TIA.

Hi Dave,
Carroll just put out a new setup guide which is really easy, and small, so
it should fit beside your keyboard easily!
I'll take a look for it, and keep u posted! :-)

I have some good advice for N1/N2/N99 tuning...watch these shows like NASCAR
Garage and Inside NASCAR (if you get them in your area).  Both almost always
have some sort of small explaination of how they tune the cars.  Definately
worth the half hour to hour per week to learn some basic things (plus you get
all your Nascar news).

Dave,
If you want a book on race-car setup, then I'm afraid "Prepare to Win" is
not the one you're looking for.
Don't get me wrong here... "Prepare to win" is just as excellent as "Tune to
win", "Engineer to Win" and (to use Mr. Smiths own (cheeky?) words) "Screw
to win" (aka "Nuts, Bolts and Fastners") :-)
"Prepare to Win" is just like the title say.. about how to *prepare* the
*car* to be a winner.
The book is full of neat ideas of how to make the car last the distance and
stay up front.

If i were to advice you on a book that would be of help.... my suggestion is
Mr. Smiths "Drive to Win"
Not only will it help you with setup's amd suh... but it will also give you
plenty of pointers as to what it takes to be a winning driver!

A real must!
