Anyone using projectors or TVs for display?

by Careful Hac » Sat, 22 Mar 2003 07:34:22

Just wondering whether anybody is running their sims with a projector
display or TV out.

My***pit rig is on casters so I wheel it in front of my desk when I
want to drive, but I'd like to leave it out of the way and just switch
displays... and I'd like a bigger display of course.

I know TVs don't support as a high a res as a monitor, so how do you
overcome that?

Thanks in advance,
Glenn

You don't.  The only way that sim driving looks good on a big screen is if the tv is a HDTV model,
or you are using a projection system capable of at least 1024x768 resolution.  Just watching a
replay or two, you will see that at 800x600 on any standard def tv just doesnt cut it, you really
need a tv-out and a display of capable of 1024x768 or higher to make it look decent.

Biz is right, you need an hdtv to get any decent PQ.  Google for a post I
did last week or so about NR2003 widescreen.  Info on using powerstrip to
get your PCon the big screen should be easy to google as well.

It's worth the hassle if you have an HD set.

If you don't mind regular TV output, digital signals for regular TV
are 720x576 or 720x486 (NTSC) pixels. Fortunately a TV does nice
analog blurring. ;-)

I'd say you would come far on normal TV with 800x600; just turn on all
the anti-aliasing (anisotropic) filtering things you have.

I run mine with an XGA-res data projector set up for an 85" display,
which in***pit view appears pretty much life-size.

I've never done it, but would imagine running games from a PC into a
standard-def TV would look like crap.  Progressive HDTV might be OK,
but except for a few models, you would need a VGA to component
transcoder.  Also, you can't get nearly as large a picture as with a
front projection system.

What model TV is it?  Does it truly support that high a resolution?  How do
you find the quality?
Be curious how your doing wireless video?  Is it just an RF signal or
svideo?

What about burn-in?  Do you have any problem with playing sims that have
non-moving information on the screen? (ex : the gear/speed pop-up in
NR2003).

Sometimes I think about using my Toshiba 65H80 as the out of my PC, but I
really fear burn-in problems.

A properly calibrated set will give you years of trouble free service without burn-in.  Burn-in is a
myth if you properly calibrate your set.

I am using a NEC LT158 LCD projector with the DVI output from my
Radeon 9700 at 1024x768 with a 70" screen and it looks great. Nice to
have that kinda size. May want to look for a LCD projector on Ebay,
can find refurbished ones pretty reasonable ($1000) when comparing to
the cost of a projection TV.I also have a 50" Toshiba High def ready
rear projection TV and hooked up N2003 with the S-Video out on my
Radeon 9700 and it looked like crap. The LCD projector picture is far
better and for less money. Steve

Have you tried connecting to your HDTV with component/high def connection?
SVideo is a bit limited.
