Help me go faster!

by Charlie Schumache » Sat, 16 May 1998 04:00:00

I can't go fast enough, and despite reading numerous posts here,
driving tips at various web pages, I still can't go more than 193mph at
Talladega.  Help! I'm getting killed in races! (and don't want to lower
the opponent strength, which is only at 97%)
The problem is in how I drive the corners, with turn 1 and 2 being
the most notable.  For example:
(I've used several downloaded setups that claim speeds of 194-196)
Pedal is down the whole time.  I hug the wall and then drop low when
entering turn 1.  Tires squeal a little.  I stay to the inside, left
tires just on the white line.  When I round the apex and into turn 2, my
speed scrubs off to 187-188.  Everything I read says that I should be
doing 190 here.
How do you drive the turns without losing too much speed?  I'm
following the suggested line on the track and I'm getting smoked.
Any suggestions?  I keep trying and so far, can't get it.
    Totally frustrated,
    Charlie

Are you using a wheel for the contorl device?
Also turn down your steering lock so you don't scrub off so much speed.  I
think I had mine set around 7 and my fastest lap was 199.052mph in the draft
and 196.6mph without the draft.

Yes, I'm using an older T1 (saving up for the TWS wheel!).  I'm try the
steering lock at hope it works.  Thanks for the advice!

You are probably entering turn one too early.  You need to use the banking
to roll down into the corner.  If you enter too early, you just follow the
bottom of the corner and your speed can go as low as 186-187 if you scrub
too much.  If you stay wide on your entry, and turn in very late, you are at
the top of the banking on your descent, and it will let you actually
accelerate somewhat when you hit the bottom of the corner.  When I hit it
just right, I can go no slower than 191 through this turn, on a light fuel
load.

Yep, that was the problem.  I took your advice, and am now running laps
194-195mph.  Thanks VERY much!

Temp. can also make a big difference on speeds.
