I sold my Amiga to get a crummy PC that would play Wing Commander.
Now, years later, I'm still bitter about that, but the pc has come so
very far, I can forgive.  But this news....what a stab in the back by
EA.
I guess we who have seen Papy swallowed by Sierra et al. will
recognize the symptons.

Richard Garriott Leaves Origin Systems Mar 30 2000 5:50PM CST
It was announced today that Richard Garriott is leaving Origin Systems
to pursue other interests. As co-founder of the company more than 15
years ago, Richard has helped Origin to grow into one of the top
entertainment software companies in the world. As creator of the Ultima
series, his contributions to the company and to the *** industry as a
whole are immeasurable, and he remains a friend of Origin Systems.
Richard has yet to announce his upcoming plans, however we at Origin
wish him success in any future endeavors.

Origin will continue to support and expand the world of Ultima Online,
as well as our online worlds in development such as Ultima Online 2.

I'm sure he'll do fine. There are probably plenty of jobs for a man
who wears a hat with a feather in it and leotards.

Just a tick, Dave....how do you infer from that press statement that he was
stabbed in the back?  I would really like to know as these powers, if
harnessed correctly, could only benefit the rest of mankind.

Hmmm, you start a company.  You sell the company, you "quote" leave
the company.  I get the feeling PUSHED by EA.  I think I combined a
couple of sites inferences.

I am somewhat acquainted with Richard Garriott, which is not to say he's a
friend, or that we hang out or anything of the sort.  I have several friends
in Austin who have known him since before Ultima Two, as well as many
friends who work or have worked for Origin in the past.  My understanding is
that for the past few years, his involvement with the company outside of
conceptualizing for Ultima was, frankly, minimal, and, frankly, his own
choice.  The buyout was Origins' idea, mind you, to take the day-to-day
business aspects of the company out of Richard's hands so that he could
focus on design work.  My own unconfirmed opinion is that he got tired of
even this minimal involvement, which was largely being an "idea hamster" and
public-relations figure, and decided to retire.

Of course this is only semi-educated speculation, I could be wrong.
Origin/EA has a terrible track record when it comes to employment practices,
so anything's possible.

So now you have a "feeling", Dave? A bit different to a broad "stabbed in
the back" statement, is it not?!

Don't draw the conclusion that because one leaves a company (or business)
that one started (or helped start) that one is automatically getting the
rough end of the pineapple.  It quite often works out the other way, mate.

naw...  :)   It seems to me Origin w/o Garriot is a crime.  So
whatever reason they two parties split it "seems" wrong so I can yell
***y *** and not feel too bad about it.  Of course this comes from
the land that elects crooks for Presidents.

Way Off Topic-Lord British leaves Origin

by Dave Henri » Tue, 04 Apr 2000 04:00:00

Well Bruce two things that sorta tie this back to RAS.  Avault.com has
a rebuttal by Origin.  They too make it sound like both LB and EA had
different views of the future.  So I guess we can say the split was
mutual.
But here is what bothers me.
Andy Hollis has not been mentioned at all, but I'm concerned for his
future, (and this is what impacts RAS)  AH has become the Lord God King
of flight sim Publishers.(his early work goes back to the C-64 with Sid
Meir.)  Longbow, Longbow2, F15IIISE etc were his babies and they mainly
focused on the higher end single sim products.(in other words, not the
arcade mass market stuff that the other group at Origin was producing)
A-10 Warthog was cancelled even tho it was in the final stages of
production.  F18 will probably be the last SERIOUS(read gpl level) sim
from EA/Origin.  Andy Hollis was re-assigned to look at producing a Wing
Commander Massively Multiplayer title.  That title and about 20 other
Origin employees have been axed(avault.com) I'm assuming he's toast
also.  So we see another totally separate computer game area that is
suffering from poor sales in the higher end of the product line.  If the
Racing Sim area suffers a similar cutdown, will we ever see a Quality
high end product again?
I'll be the first to admit the quality level of the lower class sims
has increased greatly, and we might compare Porche Unleashed with the
last few USAF products and say the ARCADE level of sim is improving
too.  But I think we are an industry in decline and the spendy
time-consuming products get the axe first.  This does not fill me with
hope for the future of Sim Racing(back on topic...finally!)

Yes maybe, but keep in mind that 20 other OSI employees got 'retired'
with him. Of course he didn't have much influence over the last couple
of years anymore but I guess this time it's been more his rather
'weird' ideas he came up with lately that probably caused EA to pull
the plug, especially in light of their 'Origin goes online only'
focus.
