Hello guys,

I just got N99.  Yes - I waited because you cannot use it on TEN and if
it doesnt have real multiplayer capability it isnt worth squat to me
personally.   However,  I got a really good deal on it so I now have it.

First... here is my PC.

Celeron 400 (Running at 450 6*75).
AOpen AX6BC motherboard
64mb of non-pc100  SDRAM
Stealth II S220 4mb Rendition card.
TM NPro
SB PCI 128 sound card
etc, etc

Ive loaded N99 and everything seems to be working.   I edited the
nr1999.pcf (I think thats the name?) file for the DOS Rendition version
configuration.

I edited the REM out of it so I get framerates and I also removed the
rem before the 4BIT section.  However... I kept the REM in front on no
DMA because when I removed it my PC crawled with N99.

Anyways...  the framerate counter in N99 is showing like 17 - 20 fps in
the pits and then maybe 30 - 32 on the track.  It then drops to mid 20s
in a race with some minor frame skipping.  This with 12 in front and 3
in back draw and all graphics maxed out.

Am I missing something with the configuration causing such crappy
framerate??   I run N2 in rendition with all graphics maxed, etc with no
problems.  15 cars ahead and 3 behind.

I realize N99 has updated graphics, etc... but is it that much more
taxing?

I run GPL with graphics maxed and 8 sounds and get a solid 36fps at all
times except at start with 19 AI and it only goes down to high 27 - 29s
????

Just curious if this is normal and I just need to soften the graphics up
or if Im missing something in the setup of N99.

Thanks in advance.

Buy something that doesn't scale out at 250 MHz, I mean, a Viper550 would at
least double your framerate, because a stealth2 is maxed out at around 250
MHz CPU speed... to try it, simply underclock your celeron and see what
framerate you get at 250.... I bet about the same as now..

Hi Scott I've noticed similar findings with my computer, while not as
fast as yours I can run N2 pretty smooth with most graphics ('cept
asphalt and grass textures) in 4 bit mode but it "chugs" in NR1999. I
think they simply put a lot of new features in NR1999 and maybe didn't
"tighten up" the graphics code as well as they could have or as well as
they did with N2. Just my thoughts though, in the nr1999.prf file the
4bit or dma won't work from my understanding, and my experience. I've
found it best to simply make a shortcut with the -4 in it but I also
found this worked better to make the shortcut point to the .exe rather
than the .bat they have. Or just do it the old fashioned dos prompt way.

Hope this helps....

Brian,

Thanks.  I also just heard that editing the file doesnt work and I need to
add the properties in the command line for my exe.

Thanks!

I simply added the -dma and -4 to the command line for running N99 and my
framerates are back up to 30 now for N99.

The problem was editing the lines in the prf file doesnt work.

Thanks anyways.  =)

How do you get the frame rate counter in n99??

Things to ponder:

If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular?

If the #2 pencil is the most popular, why is it still #2?

Why is it called tourist season if we can't shoot at them?

look at your nr1999.prf file, it will tell you what you need to know but
you should know that the framerate counter only works with the DOS
versions of nr1999.
