ICR2: Cleveland Grand Prix

ICR2: Cleveland Grand Prix

by Shawn Murr » Sun, 30 Jun 1996 04:00:00

Just returned from the Cleveland Grand Prix's Friday evening
qualifying/practice sessions.

We had a pit pass and here are some observations:
First & foremost the pit entrance in ICR2 seems to be entirely
different then at the real track.  Unless I'm wrong it appears that at
the real track there is a long/straight/narrow alley leading to the pits
from the track until it makes a quick right hand-left hand jog entering
pit row.
The cars sound awesome, sounding close to ICR2 but ICR2 could improve
it's sound accuracy tremendously for example in the "idle" of the cars
which of course the cars can't do.  Also in the screaming the cars make
under under hard braking.

Still, I love ICR2 & I congratulate the past & present members of
Papyrus!
Anxiously waiting for THE PATCH...

It's a new entrance this year, I think.

Or the popping they make when a driver lifts off the throttle to let the
car coast (Turn 9 at Laguna Seca, for instance)...  But that's another
case of going a little too far with unnecessary stuff.

I'd rather have local yellows first, y'know?

Actually, if you check the map on page 90 of the manual, you will see that the
pit entrance hasn't changed recently.  I think this is probably something
along the lines of a limit in the track development tools.  Probably like the
pitlane at Talladega.

For that matter, again on page 90, turns 6 and 7 appear identical.  Why do I have
to shift down to 1st for turn 6, but I do turn 7 in 3rd?

All the in-car camera views from today's Cleveland race makes the Papyrus version
look totally screwy...Walls where there aren't any (I know, they do that to prevent
you from cheating...but why bother?...we have replays!).  The *real* guys take turns
3 and 4 on a very different line than I've found to be fastest.

Then again, I'm not very good at this track, either.  I can do consistent 1:07-1:08's;
that's about all I can get out of my car....and my laps tend to get slower late in
a race.

I was there also, and I'm not sure how accurate ICR2 was with the pit
entrance relative to the track in previous years, because this was my
first time at the course, but it is substantially different this year
from the simulation.  You are correct about the long chute, and I
believe it is an addition this year.  The turn may have been too
difficult to judge with the layout that is represented in the game,
because the back wall that turns to the right would not lead you onto
the turn, but automatically into the pits.

Shawn,
Indycars can idle, but they have a tendency to stall if they falter at
all which is why drivers typically keep the revs high during stops.  Keeping
the revs up also is better for the engine as it doesn't temperature cycle as
bad and it keeps the turbo system at the right temp.
