Any "true" roadracing/driving sims around.....

Hi all. I just wanted to get this started. I've been kind of hesitant
on getting any new racing sims because I'm kind of getting tired of
fixed track racing. I would love to see something like "Need for
Speed" only with a serious track, say, our nations roadways (US). :-)
Could you imagine something like a Cannonball run game with the detail
of some of the new racing sims and a decent representation of at least
the nations interstates. So what if it would take 4 or more CD's for
the road database, you could seperate those CD's by region and at the
end of each region is a mandatory stop. That way it isn't really a
huge break in gameplay. Anyways, I just thought I would get that off
of my chest..... :)

How about something like Death Race 2000.  Where you get points for
hitting people as you race across the country.  Then not only is your
finishing position important, but also your poeple points.  Just a
thought.

Clifton,

Hate to say it, but with few exceptions, the US roadways are BORING!
I've driven a lot of them and they're flat out even in a motorhome!
The only one I would truly consider challenging over a reasonable
distance would be US 101 up the Oregon coast.  Now that's a road
that made me wish I'd had my 240Z with us instead of the Civic.  But
to bring this back to the sim world, if every publisher world-wide
was to cater to every little geographic area, how many versions of
each sim would there be?  The US is big, granted, but it ain't the
heart of the world.  Why not the BC coast highway?  Puts any US
road to shame!

Clifton,

This exactly what I'm waiting for...but I would prefer to drive
a 'real' city map instead of nations roadways (although it would
be nice to 'cannonball' ).
Imagine driving through the streets of New York (or any larger
city in the U.S. or Europe) with traffic lights, crossings,
Non-Player-Cars and NP-People walking across the road, Rush-hours,
highways etc. etc. Handbrake-drifts around the corners and rushing
over red-light-crossings at 100 mph while being chased by the cops,
(with a better AI than the NFS-cops, of course....)
wouldn't this be FUN ?!? Add night and day racing, different weather
conditions, the NFS graphic engine and the NASCAR damage system, and
you'll be very close to the ultimate driving game. This would surely
be a bestseller (Hello to EA Sports....do you read ?!)

Just dreaming,

Timm

Any roadways would be nice. Just make them seriously curvy and
narrow and I'll be happy. :) If the game would have old country roads
(which I know would be impossible for any kind of large geographic
area) it would be a lot of fun. Give something like the autobahn for
nice, fast driving and a good car so you don't get embarassed and it
would be fun too. I would just like to see a sim with real world cars
that is more sim than game.

I'd love to get back to New York City and drive now that I'm actually
comfortable with my driving (last time I was up there I just turned
16, I'm now 20). I can definately see going from the George Washington
to , say, the World Trades at about 100+mph. Hell, when I was last
there the people going through traffic behind ambulances were going at
least 50. :)

You brought up something about the AI of the cops in NFS. Are they
really not that intelligent or are they slow to react? Both? I still
don't have that sim (or any other new one, I'm "stuck" with Nascar and
ythe first Indycar for a while) but am planning on either getting it
or ICR2. Plus, with the graphics, can I actually get hi-res on my
system (486DX2/80 with 20MB RAM) or do I really need a Pentium for it
to actually even come up in SVGA. I can run Nascar and the demo to
ICR2 in svga with no problem whatsoever but I don't know of any
switches for the NFS demo to force it into SVGA.

Well, that's enough for me. I've got to get ready to leave and look
at some basses.

Alright, stop right there!

My idea of a fun simulator is *NOT* being stuck in bumper to bumper
traffic.  If you are looking for a _simulator_ of driving around New
York (or any other larger city), then that's what it'll be like.  For
me, that's not the idea of fun, that's life!
