Usually me. Integrating complex mathematical formulae in my head helps,
but not much.

Human beeings have been racing from day one.  Hunter/gatherers 40,000 years
ago had to run faster than the other guy to get to the prey first.  Then
there were the ancient olympics, racing for the sport of it.  Then some cat
jumped on an animal and went faster than the dude on foot.  And so on and so
on until the engine made machines faster than animals.  We are competitive
beasts, something that sets up apart from most other beasts.
We just organize it, apply pretty colors to it, and make money off it.  My 2
cents.

Well I guess the car had to come along before people had anything to drive.

On the other hand, I guess Ben Hur was pretty quick in his day on them dirt
ovals <G>

I reckon the race driver came first... it was people (men actually, read
into that whatever you will) who started racing existing motor vehicles
first. Purpose built machinery surfaced later to fulfill the desire to win.

It all depends on you definition of a car, of course. ;-))
