It doesn't shift THAT way

A few years ago when I got my 1st PC wheel, I was on the computer a lot
racing AI drivers and online. I remember getting into my Jeep and thinking
how big the steering wheel felt. The feeling went away in a few months.
Now, I've been practicing and playing with setups, franticly, for the last 2
nights getting ready to try an FV race in GPL (FV is new to me). I've been
getting home late all week, so this meant staying up until about 3am. Less
than 4 hours of sleep a night. Usually I use an RS Shifter, but I'm trying
another wheel, so I just used the paddle shifters.
This morning I figured I had just enough time to skip out of work and grab a
cup of much needed coffee before a customer came in. I hopped into my car
(auto ***), pulled out of the parking lot and when I hit about 25 mph I
grabbed the windshield washer stalk with my right finger tips and pulled (to
shift gears). I immediately knew that was a stupid think to do, and as the
wipers and spray were beating away, I reached down to the shift lever and
pushed it into neutral. DOH! It all happened in about 2 seconds.
I'm going home now to get some rest before the race. I'll try not to do any
4 wheel drifts on the way.

Heh heh heh! Don't worry Slot, I've done this too.
Hopefully it won't be long before road cars other than Ferarris have
paddle shifters.

LOL! I can relate to that, I sometimes ride my bicycle as if it was a
Ferrari 550. Ehm, I'm talking about the gearing, not mimicking the engine
sound or anything... not out loud anyway.

A classic case of "adapting" was done with a steer-by-wire car (a real
car), probably back in the 1950's.  Someone took on the challenge of
learning to drive it with the steering reversed (steer left, car turns
right).  After much learning out on a test area (with nothing to bump
into), they became quite good...
...then crashed their personal car on the way home!

LOL! Almost as bad as my wife driving her mother's car (same make and model,
just ours is 5-speed, hers is auto). Takes off fine, engine revs up, and then
she slams on the brake with her left foot reaching for the clutch.

You can get some sleep now, the next race isn't for another 2 weeks. :-)

It doesn't shift THAT way

Years ago, mid 70's, my wife (x-now, since she didn't let me buy the 246
Dino for $15000!) drove a VW Beatle with a semi-auto ***. No clutch
pedal, just a big brake pedal, but you had to shift it. The clutch engaged
when you moved the shift lever. I was driving a new Triumph TR7, standard of
course. Every time I took someone out in her car, I told them to keep both
hands on the dash. They always asked 'Why?'.

"It'll stop you from getting a headache."

-------------------------------

Reaching for the windshield washer stalk to shift was bad enough, but when I
reached for the RS Shifter....that was just pitiful.

For fun we built a rear-steering bicycle.  Same long adaptation process
and (ouch) same end result.

LOL!

But you know, pilots do a similar thing all the time, fly left seat,
left hand on yoke, right hand on throttle- fly right seat, right hand on
yoke, left on throttle.

There have been instances where a pilot with no experience in the right
seat has tried it got things mixed up... yoke forward with right hand to
add power, throttle back to raise nose!
