Sorry if this is an ignorant question....
Why when I post a message do I see it immediately, yet all other
messages I retrieve from the NG at the same time are 2 or 3 days behind?

For info, I just downloaded the latest messages and the last one is
dated Sunday at 23.36 (from M. McCarthy), yet I posted on Monday and the
message is there?
The time now is 8.55 am BST on Wednesday 19 August.
Sorry again if there is an easy answer to this that I should know
about......

Yeah :-(   (kidding)

Well, compare it to the regular post. If you send a letter to your
neighbour it will arrive faster as if you send a letter to the other
side of the world. When you post a message, it will arrive first at
your ISP, so if you download the latest messages, your message is
available. When I post a message, it got to my ISP, and it take a
while before it arrives at your ISP.

The amount of time depends...some ISP's are slow, others are fast. I
recon that your ISP is slow, because 2 a 3 days is a bit much.
