NSR: Short track help please!

by pw » Sun, 03 Apr 2005 14:05:26

Hi guys,

I thought I would run Bristol before Sunday's race.  New Sim, new MOMO
wheel.

I stink at these short tracks.  I am either slamming into the wall or
spinning out or both at the same time <g>.  I definitely can't stay in
line. These short tracks have to be frustrating for the drivers too,
no?

Well, any way, I am a new-ish NASCAR fan and would appreciate any tips
to survive a short track and also the mile plus tracks (setup tips
here, web-sites, ...).  I think a good one would be for myself to
actually listen to the commentators for once!  I am usually too busy
cooking, etc... (but what they are saying is a lot over my head any
way).

I've been running Tony Stewart's car so far in NSR.

Judging by your comments, your entering the turns to hard/fast.  Common
mistake.  Easy in, easy out is the key.  Watch an in-car camera sometime at
Bristol.  You'll see that the real drivers don't get back on the gas until
the car is pointed perfectly straight on the turn exit.

Let the car roll through the turns on it's own.

Like JP said. Go slower to go faster. Don't over drive the turn, brake
before you start turning the wheel and ease her down in the turn, let
her roll thru the center and then easy on the gas until you start
running conistent laps.

That helped a LOT guys!  Thanks!

Unfortunately I didn't have a nice experience racing Bristol.  I was
at the back of the pack at lap 42 of 50, and having pitted earlier, I
decided to stay out as the rest of the cars headed to pit road.  I
must have run at least 6 laps and thought I was the cat's meow when it
dawned on me that the number of laps I had run never changed!  So I
decided to pit and the NASCAR official got out of my way and my Crew
Chief told me to get going.

Well, I couldn't get going.  I was stuck in the pits!

Maybe the race was red-flagged?  Got me, never heard it.

Don't know what I did wrong, but I think I am going to can this so
called "sim" and find something else to use my new MOMO wheel for! No,
not open wheeled sims for God's sake! :-)

Looks like Computer *** World was bought out by PC-Lamer!!  They
gave it a great review in their very short review.  Pathetic IMHO.

All righty then.  I will take the lack of response to mean that this
game is dead and/or a loser so I won't waste any more time with it.

NSR: Short track help please!

by Ed Medli » Tue, 05 Apr 2005 20:33:39

It just takes practice. If you have Nascar 2003 Season, it, IMO, is more
realistic at this point than NSR. I have both, and also a MOMO (black)
wheel. I have a really tough time getting the settings correct in NSR for
the correct response. It took me a ton of tweaking to get it where it felt
right for me. In NR2003, it feels correct right away. On short tracks I
accelerate hard down the straights and try and brake as late as I can for
quick speeds. All the braking is done BEFORE I begin my entrance to the
turn. I try to get the car "set" properly so that I can begin accelerating
easily as early as I can on exit. This is the trick. Don't just hammer it.
Go lightly on the accelerator first and then harder until flat out again. If
there is no traffic outside, I try and let the car drift all the way up very
close to the wall and then you are ready to start down and brake again. Try
practicing with no other cars and not using the brakes at all at Bristol.
You will find that you can run pretty fair times by just letting off the
accelerator early and letting the car drift through the turns on it's own.
Then try letting off the accelerator a bit later and braking a little. Then
just keep moving your lift point later and later and braking harder and
later without locking the tires and you will find your times increasing
greatly. When you have a lot of traffic, you will find that you drive more
with the accelerator and brakes than the wheel. Just relax in traffic and
take what is there and don't panic.

Great advice Ed!  Thanks so much.  I will give it a go!

Unfortunately, I can't get NR2003 to run any more.

NSR: Short track help please!

by Larr » Sat, 09 Apr 2005 02:58:06

First thing you HAVE to do for Bristol is edit the car setup file and lock
the Diff.  If you don't, you'll start burning up the RR at the exit of the
turn, and it won't stop until you brake for entry into the next turn.

When I first got NSR I couldn't for the life of me figure out why I was
laying a tire patch the ENTIRE length of the straights at Bristol until I
heard about the screwed up Diff settings in every setup in the game.
