OT: Help in understanding bandwidth

Sorry for the OT post, but I know some of you are knowledgeable in this.
Amhosting has (temporarily?) shut down my site for excessive bandwidth
usage.  I've always thought of T&R as a small site. I'm allowed 6000mb per
month,or about 200mb per day. That should be enough for 200,000 page views a
day according to Amhosting. If you are familiar with slottweak.com, can you
tell me how I can be using so much bandwidth. I really don't understand it.
What could be using it up?

Give me 10 mins to look at your site, and at amhosting in general, This
*is* something I am qualified for (I Run tech support at a web hosting
co in UK).

BTW, Thanks 4 helping me (and others) with my Guillemot Ferrari FF Wheel
;)

OT: Help in understanding bandwidth

Hey bud,

We went through the same BS when we first started PowerSims.com.  We
purchased bandwidth from AIT, WARNING - JUST DON'T, and they complained our
site was putting 'too much pressure on our server' even though our stats
did not show us anywhere NEAR the bandwidth limit for our month.  They said
it was all the 'hits' (25,000 per day) and not the bandwidth.  Yeah...
right.  We got out of that contract and purchased some bandwidth from
Interland.  They were really good and we never had a problem with them.  In
fact, if I were to do anything again requiring bandwidth, I would probably
contact them again.

Good luck and rest assured, it sounds like Amhosting has over-subscribed
the server and blaming it on your site to try and get more money via a new,
more expensive subscription.

Took a look at a cached copy of your site, (good old inktomi :))
No way you could use up that b/width with that no of visitors.

Check that your webspace hasn't been 'compromised', look for
large/unrecognised files in your webspace or web logs (if provided)

Unfortunatly what Scott said seems to be the likely cause, If you have
copies of your webstats then see about 'breach of contract' or something
similar.

Find out what your bandwidth avg is for me and I may be able to offer
you a temp home till you get it sorted

quick (and dirty) bandwidth usage calc:

(Size of images * avg number of pages viewed per visitor) *
visitors/month * 115%

How about removing those big .jpeg-files on your front page and replacing them
with proper thumbnails?

Alan, I can get back to you with the stats later. Basically, amhosting took
me off line without warning. Their policy states that there will be a
warning first. They just shut me down. We figured out that it was the GP3
directory with large images and high traffic that was causing the problem.
So, they deleted the whole directory which included other pics, including
ones used on my home page. The GP3 page got a lot of hits because of a post
in the HighGear forum. The thing is, in a couple days the post would be
buried and forgotten anyway. I'm at work now and could have placed the pics
elsewhere (different url) if I had the chance to save them here first. I
have a wedding rehearsal tonight, wedding to attend tomorrow and busy
Friday. So unless I stay up late, which I probably will, I won't have a
chance to update things. Had they warned me yesterday, I would have taken
care of everything right away. I don't think that shutting me down was
called for. They said "after you ignored repeated warnings...."     Well, I
never got any warnings (which they now admit). Plus, I have 2 site with
them. The other one, gilberthomesinc.com, hardly gets any hits at all. I
don't think I was treated fairly.

Toni, I don't know much about web publishing. I admit it, and don't have
time to start learning all there is about it.  So, could you explain to me
what you mean? How to do it?

Unfortunatly 'shoot first - questions later' has become very much
standard
practise in the hosting business, not without reason in *some* cases
(many of the hosting co's providers have bandwidth overage charges that
would frankly scare some ppl, 150-300 GBP per Gb/Month is not uncommon
here in UK!) Not that this is acceptable though.

One of my staff specialises in 'bandwidth reduction' for graphics
(manually done, not optimising s/ware), EMail me a copy of all your
graphics from your site and I'll get him to do his stuff on them, should
only take a couple of days, It can make a big difference (50-75%
reduction in size not uncommon, no loss in quality).

Alan.

>Toni, I don't know much about web publishing. I admit it, and don't have

Well, it's just that those pics of wheels you have on the front page are
actually shrunk down from larger size. This is wasteful and it's better to
create smaller copies of the pictures for using as thumbnails to link to the
actual, bigger pictures.
