I need some help trying to decide if DSL is right for my situation.
I've been using Sprynet/Mindspring/Earthlink for more than 4 years and the
connection has been just about perfect every single day.  Racing GPL online
at VROC yeilds rock solid connections with absolutely no warping in 18-20
car races. But the high latency problems started when I gave Nascar3 a shot,
then gave up. But with Nascar 4, I once again tried online racing, and the
latency is so bad that not only do I have the worst warping possible, but
the cars actually just vanish from the track.  FPS vary from the high ***s
to the high 30s.

I've checked out my local cable company but they don't offer cable
modem service in my area.  The only option I have opened to me is DSL from
Velocity.  The service costs $49.95 per month.  They claim up to 50 times
faster then my 56k connection.  I also have another computer system that my
son uses to go online. Can both systems be online at the same time and how
would that effect my connection and latency?  How reliable is Velocity?

Any and all information is more then welcome.

My system is:

AMD TBird K7-800
Creative Lab SoundBlaster Live X-Gamer
Voodoo5 5500 AGP graphics card
128mg of SDRAM

Don't know about velocity but I got DSL thru Bellsouth and my latency in N3 is
0.03-0.05. With previous provider the warp was pathetic. IMHO cant go wrong
with DSL. Cost me 40 a month

I think you mean telocity which is was I have. Actually it is perfect for N3
as long as I am the host. Maybe the problems people are having with N4
is that the fast network connections are not hosting races? When I hosted
even 56K modem users was smooth.

Also it *CAN* be 50x faster. It all depends on your distance from your
main phone switch. You must be at least 18,000 feet away. The farther
you are the lower the speed. I am ~15,000 feet and am getting 320K
up and down...

There is a way I think but I am not sure how to do it. Telocity has actually
been very reliable (knock on wood). The main problem is that sometimes
their mailserver is offline. But the rest of the internet is there :-)

Then there were some glitches during the install. Like no one knew
what the hell they were doing and had no other clue. Finally I got
in touch with the Level 3 tech support engineer (this is after they
supposed have everything setup correctly). I think he was the
only one at the company that knew what the hell was going on with
this newfangled DSL thingie. It turned out that my connection had
a dropdown box set wrong on the DSLAM (which is in central
Colorado, I am in Chicago)!

In my case my phone provider is Ameritech. So because of that,
Rhythms were the people that actually provided the DSL service
and Telocity is the ISP. So you have that extra layer of BS to wade
through. Oh yeah... But first Ameritech had to string the DSL line
to my house and configure it for rhythms to use. Turns out they
didn't contact rhythms when my line was connected. Instead I get
a call from Ameritech offering DSL service!!! So I have to make
my own phone calls to Telocity and Rhythms and no one really
knew what the hell was going on! It was great.

After that initial glitch, everything has been cool though.

Velocity?

Check your local baby Bell. They all offer DSL now. I think Mindspring
also offer DSL now. Checking sure wouldn't hurt.

My Pacific Bell DSL costs $40 per month, and latency is extremely low
when the conditions are right. I'm in San Francisco, and EA's San Mateo
NFS:PU server is nearby, and I get ping time of like 14 ms. :-)  Of
course,
it's hell getting it installed... Read the stories at dslreports.com

Hi Joel,

If have DSL also and like Greg's experience, installation wasn't pretty.  In
fact it was downright ugly.  But after the initail snafu's things have been
downright silky.  I use GTE (my phone company) out here on the west coast
and after 2 years of service I must say it's one of the best decisions I've
made concerning online ***.  I also play online with my son using s $69
hub from Best Buy.  That , two cables and an extra network card are all you
should need to get both PC's up and running.  I'm running 768k up and down
and have yet to find any degradation in connection quality while we're both
online.  Good luck!

So you just hook the output of the bridge to a hub and that is it???

Maybe :)

It depends on if you are allowed Multiple IP's, or if you are purchasing
Multiple IP's.

Most Cable and DSL providers give you ONE dynamic IP address.  In these
cases, you have to use a Cable/DSL Router, Win2K Server Machine or other
form of ICS to use multiple computers.

You guys pay a lot for DSL in the U.S. compared to Canada. I pay
$40.00 CAD, which is about $26.60 U.S., plus a few bucks for taxes.

Someone forgot to do the currency exchange. :-D

But really, DSL prices is expected to fall 50% in the next 5 years.
