I've found a Celeron 300A for $72.00, and was wondering about motherboards.
I found an ABIT BH6 for $112.00, but wouldn't be able to afford the ATX case
to put them in (damn groceries!).

I also found a SOYO SY-6LK motherboard (AT style) that would work great for
my budget - $90.00, and no new case required.  Anyone use this board?  Any
luck OC'ing this combo?  I would love to hear some good news here.

I'd say wait and save a few more bucks in order to get the Abit..

If you spend extra for a new case you may be close
to being able to put together a system with your old
parts and selling it to make up for the $$ you spent
on the case.

I got the Abit for $102 at www.wvcsi.com.  I'd recommend sticking with it.
You can probably find it for a tad less.  ATX cases can be had for ~ $50-$60
on the net, though shipping may be prohibitive.  I bought an InWin locally for
$70.  You'll also need a heatsink & fan for your OEM Celeron.  And maybe new
RAM.  Sorry I can't help you with your alternate MB choice.  But if funds are
that tight, I'd wait a bit.

I have my Celeron 300A BOXED, running at 450 on an FIC KA-6100.  It's an
AT board that supports up to 103MHZ FSB.  Not as fast as the 133 of the
Abit, but then, running at 133 will really***up your PCI and AGP bus
speeds, anyway.  I like mine and it's a board we sell for $99. I put PC-100
RAM in it, don't know whether 66MHz stuff would work or not (tho' I doubt
it).

Just curious guys.....

Is the 333A a big no-no with regards to O/C-ing??

seeing you all are talking about the 300 it make me wonder if I've done
something stupid or not..

please advice.

The 333A has a multiplier of 5 (5*66), against the 4.5 of a 300A (4.5*66).
Since some 300A's run at 504MHz (especially on a BH6), you might try
your MB at 100MHz to get your CPU running at 500MHz. You'll need
100MHz RAM, extra cooling and maybe the voltage must be upped a bit.

To have the best chance of O'clocking the Celeron 300A to 450 or 464, you
will need the BH6 motherboard. It is able to change the CPU core voltage
which can make the difference between being able to successfully overclock
and not.

I've just bought this combo and at the CPU default setting of 2.0v I can
only overclock to 374MHz, but if I increase the core voltage to 2.1v, I can
overclock to 464Mhz and if I bump it up to 2.3v I can run at 504MHz
(although I dont because 2.3v will probably fry the chip in no time!)

Hope this helps...

Well, I went and done it:

PC100 Mainboard(AT style w/USB)
Celeron 300A
64 MEG PC100 RAM

Running at 450 mhz even as we speak - first try!  Never even fired it up at
300 mhz.

Total cost:
Parts: $170.00
Trade: 1 old Abit board, 166 INTEL chip
Tax: $8.00
Labor: $Zilch

Now if I could only afford that 3d card...

What brand of motherboard did you use?  I'm considering this upgrade for my
old AT machine as well.

Soyo also has a Baby AT form factor intel BX based board, the SY-6BB  that
fits in a regular AT style case (ie: if your are upgrading from Socket 7
etc. , you don't have to buy a new ca$e).

I can attest to the SY-6BB being a very stable platform for the Celeron
300A. Mine is clocked to 464mHz on this board and has never (ever) locked up
since I started it for the first time about a month ago..

best luck,

I just put a Celeron 300A on a PC100 BX board in my old AT case.  Everything
was perfect, and it fired up at 450 first try!
Not bad for a $79 board.

Even the experts say go with the Abit Bh6 board. ITs cmos bus
adjustable. There are others that will work, Im only mention this since its
only the board that is mentioned the most..

After -=REZ=-'s reccomendation on the SOYO MB, I did a little checking
around, and it appears that the SOYO SY-6BA+ is a very comparable unit, both
in specs and reviews. Given the difficulty of find BH6's (Last week
impossible, this week [1/18/99] I found a couple at www.abetterdeal.com ),
the SOYO looks like it is worthy of consideration. I would have ordered it
had I not found the BH6's. Anyway, keep an open mind to other alternatives,
heck the BH6 will be long forgotten soon enough anyway.
